Love that! <3 ;) Speaking of colourfull!
Fijne rit/reis!

I saw the Trainbow today! Yey! 🚂🌈

Hello NMBS-SNCB, tomorrow is the start of the EU parliamentary elections and I was wondering: Are there any parties with especially good policies on passenger rail in the running?
Hi there, sorry for the late response. I have no clue how half of Tumblr works and just now found the questions in my inbox, gathering dust.
To answer your question, I found Volts pan-european approach for public transport quite compelling , as well as the greens.
I'm not too familiar with the specifics of other parties so it's important to do research and not get your information from a parody blog though!
Who should the people vote for on Sunday to trainmax?
Ah, well this is embarrassing. To answer a good question way after it was relevant: any of the parties that focus on expanding public transport on an international level. If you're into that sort of thing.

LIMAX
I’m tired, I’m bored, let’s talk about the RE18, also sometimes known as LiMAX or Drielandentrein (three countries train).
Euregio
This international regional train connects the region known as Euregio Maas-Rhine, the area around the point where Netherlands, Belgium and Germany meet. The region has a long shared and sometimes weird history. The main cities are Aachen (Germany, about 260,000 inhabitants), Liège (Belgium, about 200,000 people) and Maastricht (Netherlands, about 120,000 folks). A cluster of smaller towns around Heerlen (Netherlands, 86,000 citizens) forms a fourth major pole. Each of the regions gets roughly around half a million inhabitants each, but with a lot of green space in between. Here's a very crude map:
Blue are borders, black are relevant passenger rail lines, red is the one high speed line I'll talk about later.
This region is either right in the centre of Europe, or at the periphery of each of its respective countries, depending on what aspect you look at. Centre of Europe is undeniably better, but it requires international cooperation to work out. For me, living in Aachen, it’s great. My nearest Ikea is in the Netherlands, and I can watch French movies in cinemas in Liège.
But a lot of things aren't perfect, and the regional rail connections are a good example. Differing ticketing systems mean that it's not only expensive to cross the border, it's often very difficult to figure out what it costs at all. In a lot of places, trains only did short hops over the border, and then you had to change to a different train to get anywhere interesting. Some lines weren't even electrified yet. But in 2018, that was all about to change.
Update: Turns out the train won't run all the way to Liège this December either. "Unexpected technical challenges" with train control systems mean the date has been shifted to the first half of 2024. We'll see how that works out in practice. Source (sadly behind a paywall):
Die Geschichte des RE 18, der als Dreiländerzug eigentlich von Aachen über Heerlen und Maastricht durchgängig nach Lüttich fahren soll, blei
New update: Sunday June 9th is the official opening date now, fittingly the same day as the EU parliament election in Belgium and Germany (the Netherlands like to have their elections on Thursdays so they’ll vote on June 6th already). I’ve seen these trains parked in Liège the last time I was there a couple of weeks ago already, so it seems like it may actually be true. I’ll give it a try and report back then, whether you want me to or not. @arriva-official Looking forward to it!
More delays for everyone!
This time it's an infrastructure issue: Flooding between Maastricht and Liège has apparently destroyed sections of the line, and it'll take at least until June 16th 5:00 (am) to fix. This figure is from the NS website, and I don't know whether that end date is realistic or just something they guessed and filled into the computer; I suppose we'll see.
Anyway, I'm calling it now: This train's cursed. The delays seem to be almost as bad as Fyra (if you want to scared Dutch or Belgian train bloggers just softly whisper that word in their ear). It's nowhere near as terrible, the trains do run well between the Netherlands and Germany and have for years, but it's getting comical how long it's taking them for the short hop from Maastricht to Liège at this point. Especially when nature itself now seems to have it out for this train as well.
Final update: The train finally runs! Here it is in Liège Guillemins station, ready to head to Aachen.
Quick report from my journey:
Well, it's the same train it's been since early 2019, only now also in Belgium. I find it much nicer on the inside than the old AM80 "Break" trains that @nmbs-sncb-official used to run to Maastricht before (and also nicer than their modern Desiros for that matter, SNCB can be a bit barebones when it comes to interiors), but less nice than the Belgian I11 coaches that I had on the train ride from Aachen central station to Liège on the direct route. Honestly, that line, known as S41 in Belgium and RE29 on its short German section, still remains the premier way to travel between these two cities. It's faster and has much better scenery and (travelling towards Aachen) Germany's oldest surviving railroad tunnel. The Drielandentrein remains the method of choice for all sorts of shorter distances. Note, however, that the Drielandentrein is fully wheelchair accessible (sadly not at all stations), which the RE29 is not.
The train journey was not fully without its issues. We did an emergency stop just a few meters after starting in Liège, and then again shortly after the dutch/belgian border somewhere between Eijsden and Maastricht Randwyck. Would it be mean to suggest that the Belgian drivers who run the train on this section still need to get used to it?
The passenger announcement system wasn't working well, which isn't new, it has always had its flaws, but this time it was particularly fucked. Apparently it doesn't yet know about Liège, so it kept hallucinating positions, announcing we were soon reaching Valkenburg when we were actually about to reach Visé.
The belgian train guards also did some weird dance where they blew the whistle, waited for the doors to close, went to talk with the driver, another (probably pre-recorded) whistle sounded, and then the guard would open the first door again, look out, close it again, and then the train would depart. They did that at every station between Liège and Maastricht. Not sure what was up with that. They didn't do that on the sections after Maastricht, since those are @arriva-official drivers and the train just doesn't have a guard on that section.
The journey from Maastricht on was uneventful, because it really isn't a new train. We did arrive a bit late in Aachen West, probably because of the issues on the belgian part, but nothing serious.
My understanding is that there are some issues with tickets, since south of Maastricht the train is technically an SNCB train, which means that for the OV chipkaart (which requires users to know which company operates their train), it counts as an @nederlandsespoorwegen train even though it clearly says Arriva, and apparently you need to get out in Maastricht and tap out and tap in again and then reenter the train? Not sure about that. The secret trick here is that if you want to have a rail journey day in the Aachen-Maastricht-Liège region, you can buy the Euregioticket, which is valid the entire day for all local and IC trains in the region for about 20 euros. Also, the belgian train guard was too busy opening and closing the doors twice at every stop to check anyone's ticket anyway.
On the one hand, this isn't a big deal. I've driven Aachen-Liège-Maastricht-Aachen loops in my car just to charge the battery after it was dead. It's a regional train like any other. On the other hand, in the rail world, turning a three country journey into a regional train like any other is a massive achievement, as can be seen by the fact that it took so long. Laws and regulations and voltages and train control systems all conspire to make this seemingly simple thing way too difficult.
In my opinion there is no good reason why any train should ever end in Aachen or Maastricht or Heerlen, instead of continuing over the border. But getting there is going to be difficult and costly. This is a major important first step, and I hope it doesn't remain the last. A direct train from Aachen to the Randstad, or at least Eindhoven, would be a great next step. The city of Eindhoven has been begging for that for well over a decade that I know of. A direct Aachen-Brussels IC train that doesn't cost ICE or Eurostar (former Thalys) money would be great, and could easily be extended to Oostende.
The thing about rail travel in this region is that every positive change takes forever, and far too often we're still taking steps backwards. Things have changed, a lot, and I'm grateful for that. When I first arrived in Aachen there wasn't even a direct train to Maastricht at all, you had to change in Heerlen (a station that still looked run-down and normal at the time, instead of like Disneyland). I hope we can build at that, and I hope we can improve things more and more quickly in the future.
