“  now  ,  c'mon  .  none  of  that  ”  grin  spreads  like  poison  ,  against  the  given  circumstance  of  being  faced  with  possibly  fatal  consequence  .  “  you  didn't  even  let  me  admire  the  sight  of  you  before  trying  to  stake  me  .  which,  rude  ,  by  the  way  .  "

a  laugh  escapes  him,  though  that  doesn't  stop  him  from  pushing  his  entire  body  weight  forward,  pinning  silas  back.  hopefully  the  rough  of  the  tree  bark  digs  into  his  skin  enough  to  hurt.  the  stake  hovers  just  over  the  vampire's  heart  —  dangerously  close  now.  satya's  own  grin  shows  teeth.  "the  view  is  a  privilege,  you  know,"  he  drawls.  "what  have  you  done  to  earn  the  right  to  admire,  hm?"

her  nails  dig  into  her  palms  at  her  sides.  acacia  owes  it  to  yumi  to  not  look  away,  no  matter  how  much  she  wants  to.  "i  didn't  do  it  to  hurt  you,  i  promise,"  she  says.  "i  know  you  don't  want  to  hear  it,  but  it's  not  you.  it's  really  not.  it's  me.  i  wasn't...  we  weren't  supposed  to  like  each  other  so  much.  but  i  do."  she  reaches  out.  touches  yumi's  cheek  to  brush  her  tears  away.  there's  only  so  much  acacia  can  take.  "like  you,  that  is."  her  voice  dips.  smaller  now.  "i  do.  so  much."

waiting   for   the   other   shoe   to   drop   .   .   .   percisely   what   yujun   does   best   .   they   fear   the   impact   ,   though   not   as   much   as   the   anticipation   of   it   .   yet   ,   with   samuel   .   .   .   it   never   happens   .   it's   disheartening   in   a   way   .   yet   ,   there's   not   much   to   envision   that   as   he   simply   nods   .   “   very   well   ”   cold   ,   impersonal   .   it's   an   old   habit   ,   a   wound   that   occasionally   opens   on   it's   own   -   distance   between   him   and   the   ones   they   keep   close   .   emotional   distance   ,   physical   distance   .   .   .   just   anything   that   aids   the   ache   .   especially   in   trying   times   like   these   ,   yujun   can't   help   himself   .   “   you   see   ,   that's   also   what   i   think   ,   but   that's   not   exactly   what   press   and   media   makes   out   of   it   ”   full   lips   purse   .   “   nevertheless   ,   it's   over   ,   anyways   .   can't   believe   i   got   myself   caught   in   that   ,   deeply   unprofessional   .   ” 

the  face  he  makes  is  a  tell  -  tale  sign  of  what  samuel  thinks  of  this  whole  ordeal.  incredulous,  silly,  stupid  —  and  none  of  that  yujun’s  fault.  “what?”  he  starts,  brows  raised.  he  squeezes  their  hand  again.  reassuring  him  is  turning  out  to  be  harder  than  sam  expected.  “being  into  someone?  nothing  unprofessional  about  that.”  except  that's  not  entirely  true,  but  once  again  ;  not  yujun's  fault.  who  cares  what  the  rest  of  the  world  thinks?  “people  fall  in  love  with  people  they  work  with  all  the  time.  you're  hardly  the  first  person  to  do  that.  besides,”  and  here  he  trails  off,  taking  his  hand  off  yujun's.  his  eyes  refuse  to  leave  their  face  still.  “it  could  be  worse.  could've  been  me  falling  in  love  with  them.  now  that  would've  been  unprofessional.  troubling  for  the  team,  too,  probably.  but  you're...”  he  needs  to  thread  carefully.  there's  nothing  worse  than  making  someone  already  halfway  into  shutting  down  go  all  the  way  there.  “there's  no  real  stakes,  at  least.  no  professional  ones,  anyway.”

“  you're  late.  i  think  it's  time  i  start  charging  you  by  the  hour.  ”

it's  not  jax's  fault.  it's  not.  andrés'  fingers  tighten  around  his  glass  anyway.  "yeah,  it  did,  actually,"  he  says,  voice  teetering  between  casual  and  cruel.  "always  knew  you  wouldn't  have  it  in  you  to  stay  in  the  big  leagues."  his  eyes  meet  jax's  in  a  challenge  as  he  downs  his  shot.  pity  party  for  two  and  all  that.  "i  thought  i  was  wrong  for  a  minute  there  —  when  everyone  celebrated  that  call-up  ages  ago.  that  maybe  you  weren't  a  fluke.  guess  not."

response   emits   a   laugh   ,   something   dry   and   downright   nasty   .   tristan   wasn't   known   to   be   a   benelovent   man   ,   after   all   .   moreso   alike   a   snake   with   how   canines   show   along   a   smirk   remaining   on   otherwise   blank   features   .   “   you   know   .   .   .   ”   tagged   onto   a   sigh   ,   merely   a   gateway   for   yet   another   impact   ready   to   hit   surface   .   “   when   marco   ”   ,   always   marco   .   .   .   never   dad   .   “   talked   about   sending   someone   ,   my   expectations   were   quite   ,   uh   .   .   .   piqued   .   but   big   fucking   chance   he   actually   sends   someone   with   expertise   ”   natural   given   as   eyes   dig   deeper   into   ilhan   .   and   there   was   nothing   careful   about   it   ,   either   .   ruthless   and   even   cruel   to   an   extend   .   “   instead   ,   i   get   you   ,   taking   up   space   you're   not   even   skilled   enough   to   waste   away   in   ”   words   drip   venom   ,   enclosure   revoked   as   tristan   takes   yet   another   set   of   steps   towards ihan   .   “   but   ,   sure   thing   .   go   ahead   ,   do   you   little   tasks   ”   another   smile   spreads   ,   still   lacking   any   emotion   whatsoever   .   “   and   ,   who   knows   ,   maybe   that'll   push   you   up   the   ranks   .   maybe   then   you   finally   earn   your   chance   to   get   on   your   fucking   hind legs   and   bark   for   him   like   the   good   pet   you   are   ”   ,   pat   on   the   cheek   the   sole   form   of   contact   afore   tristan   retracts   . 

marco.  ilhan  almost  laughs.  tristan  would  deserve  it,  he  thinks,  if  he  laughs  out  loud  in  tristan's  face.  it's  fucking  psychotic,  the  way  this  guy  thinks.  he  doesn't  laugh.  "marco,"  ilhan  repeats.  derision  is  written  across  his  features.  "you're  unbelievable,  you  know  that?"  they're  almost  chest  -  to  -  chest  now.  if  he  leans  in  just  a  few  inches,  his  nose  would  brush  against  tristan's.  "marco  just  handed  you  all  this  on  a  silver  platter,  and  you're  standing  here...  doing  what,  exactly?  trying  to  get  into  a  pissing  contest  because  you  can't  handle  whatever's  out  there?"  ilhan's  hand  reaches  out.  his  index  finger  jabs  at  tristan's  chest,  just  right  above  his  heart.  it  stays  there  —  like  an  accusation  he's  not  yet  done  with.  his  jaw  tightens  when  tristan's  answering  touch  lands  on  his  cheek.  inhale,  exhale.  "fuck  you,  tristan,  really.  today,  out  of  all  days,  and  you  still  got  nothing  better  to  do  than  pick  your  stupid  little  fights.  kinda  sad,  yeah?"  funny  how  he  always  brings  out  the  worst  out  of  ilhan.  "guess  that  just  shows  that  all  you  are  is  that  little  ungrateful,  rabid  barking  puppy  who  still  needs  good  old  dad  to  yank  on  his  leash.  makes  us  even."

teeters  on  the  brink  of  going  rabid.      when  left  to  her  own  devices,   talya  can't  think  of  anything  but  the  dull  ache  in  her  jaw.      all  due  to  one  of  their  virtuous  periods  of  self  restraint,   of  course                     desperate  to  prove  she  was  something  more  than  bloodlust,   skirting  the  edge  of  proving  the  opposite.      head  drops  to  the  table,   a  whine  high  in  their  throat,      ❝   i'm  so  hungry.   ❞

“you  could  eat.”  it’s  said  breezily,  like  yiran  isn’t  wearing  a  smile  sharper  than  their  teeth  and  talya  isn’t  desperate  for  blood.  like  this  is  just  them  making  conversation  on  a  casual  thursday  evening.  their  fingers  drum  on  the  table  next  to  her  head,  followed  by  a  low  hum.  “funny,  isn’t  it?  i  always  liked  how  hungry  we  can  get.”  the  grin  stretches.  white  peeks  from  between  yiran’s  red  lips,  lightly  digging  into  the  flesh.  “makes  us…  human  somehow.”

“  and  get  us  caught?  great  fucking  idea,  celine.  ”  it  feels  like  her  hands  are  working  in  overdrive,  too  busy  trying  to  cover  their  tracks  to  notice  how  they're  shaking  and  sweating.  it's  too  close  to  call  —  too  many  variables  left  in  play.  a  few  minutes  give  or  take  before  the  tampered  alarm  is  discovered  by  security,  and  the  only  way  out  would  be  down  ten  floors.  she's  left  staring  at  the  screen,  time  ticking  as  the  files  are  slowly  deleted,  resisting  the  urge  to  hit  the  monitor.  what  a  backwards  thing  it  is,  computers  that  were  built  two  decades  ago  and  high  tech  cameras  meant  to  stop  people  like  them.  “  go  —  you  should  go.  i'm  not  leaving  until  this  is  done  and,  ”  glances  at  the  screen.  43%.  “  it's  too  risky  for  you  to  stay.  ”

“no.”  leave  it  to  them  to  be  every  possible  cliche  under  the  sun  right  now.  celine  isn’t  stupid  —  they’d  seen  those  cheesy  heist  movies  where  everything  goes  to  shit  because  the  stupid  fucking  characters  won’t  leave  when  they’re  told  to.  it  doesn’t  stop  her  from  standing  her  ground,  folding  her  arms  over  her  chest.  “what’s  the  point  of  being  a  getaway  driver  when  i  got  no  passengers,  huh?  no.  best  case  scenario,  you  get  caught.  worst  case  we  both  get  caught.  chances  are  shit  either  way.  might  as  well  risk  it.”  she’ll  hate  them  later,  but—  they  reach  out.  their  fingers  clamp  down  over  ayanna’s  wrist,  curling  and  squeezing  and  tugging.  “come  on.  heard  someone  smart  say  that  two  is  better  than  one.”

skilled  provocation  unwields  further  as  cypress  circles  the  table  ,  sole  thing  separating  the  both  ,  fingertips  slowly  grazing  among  polished  wood  .  a  touch  that's  meant  to  ground  ,  maybe  even  go  as  far  as  amplify  .  .  .  to  showcase  the  width  of  restriction  ,  for  those  exact  fingertips  yearn  to  reach  for  the  other  .  though  with  an  affliction  beyond  affection  -  probing  at  andra's  seams  ,  testing  just  how  easily  they'd  come  apart  for  him  to  grasp  inside  .  could  i  still  see  myself  within  the  depths  of  you  ,  cypress  wondered  only  to  himself  .  “  speak  ,  there  must  a  reason  to  your  visit  ”  ,  was  instead  uttered  between  them  .

what's  better  than  to  fight  ice  with  fire?  "i  don't  think  i  asked  you,  either,"  ilhan  shoots  back.  it  comes  out  forced  —  nowhere  near  as  natural  as  he  hoped  it  would.  that's  what  happens  when  you  have  barely  any  fire  in  you,  he  supposes.  he  shakes  his  head,  rounding  the  corner  to  place  tristan  between  himself  and  the  wall.  "i'm  asking  now."  their  eyes  meet.  this,  at  least,  he's  capable  of  not  looking  away  from.  "will  you  please  let  me  do  my  fucking  job?  your  inauguration  party's  not  gonna  start  without  me."

distant   eyes   focus   ,   more   or   less   affected   .   still   ,   there's   a   flicker   .   “   so   ,   you've   seen   ,   huh   ”   methodical   in   dissecting   the   other's   intention   -   a   makeshift   way   to   feel   around   the   ache   hiding   in   it   . 

it's—  weird,  to  say  the  least.  but  there  are  weirder  things  that  samuel  has  been  exposed  to  under  the  glitter  and  glamour  and  glimmering  lights,  so  he  tries  for  a  smile.  it's  followed  by  his  hand  on  top  of  yujun's,  squeezing.  "yeah,  i've  seen,"  he  says.  "c'mon.  you  know  i  don't  care  about  that.  it's  a  little  weird,  yeah,  but  who  cares?  it  shouldn't  impact  their  career.  or  yours."
