HEATHERS STARTERS
@niner1309 asked:
❛ just saying , it’s not hard to end a life. ❜
Braig says nothing for a few moments. He only scratches at the scar on the side of his face. He still can’t feel anything there, so it’s mostly a force of habit. He doesn’t even notice he’s doing it at first. When he does, he stops, glances at his hand, lets it fall to his side. He sighs.
“I’m not…” A pause as he considers the best way to phrase this. “I don’t mean that it’s difficult physically. Especially not for people with the kind of training we have.” Different though the training may be. He adjusts the end of his sleeve and folds his hands behind his back. “But there’s a weight to taking a life. Even if you can’t feel the Force, every time someone dies, you have to accept that you’ve just created a void in the universe that can never be filled. That person is gone. They can’t be replaced.” He pauses, then looks up.
“And I do mean anyone, Niner. That includes you, and all of your brothers.”
Niner’s helmet tilts as his gaze follows Braig’s hand, eyes lingering on the large scar along the padawan’s cheek. Then his head turns, looking past Braig as he bites his cheek.
It must he hard to kill someone when you can feel every thing breathe, he thought. His weight shifted. Talk of the force had always made him uncomfortable, and the idea of something so powerful and unseen made him uneasy. “It’s easier to shoot when you’re just killing a piece of meat,” he said bluntly. Then he softened, realizing his response may have been a little harsh. “I’m sure it’s not easy, Commander. Killing is a lot more difficult when you empathize with the enemy.”
Niner went silent. It definitely felt like he and his brothers were replaceable. After his original squad had died on Geonosis, the Republic barely batted an eye when they replaced his brothers. There were no words of remorse or apologies. He knew there would be no funeral or burial for him if he was ever killed in action.
Niner cleared his throat. Thoughts like that made him feel tremendously guilty, almost treasonous. “Thank you, Commander.” Niner nodded. He knew the padawan meant what he said. “I’m glad to have soldiers like you on the battlefield with us.”
"Fierfek. Now, if they'd only added a spot of maranium to the warhead, it would have burned a really pretty purple."

I think you need a spa day there, Niner. ┐(´∀`)┌ Maybe it'll let you unclench enough to remove a couple sticks from their current aggressive occupation of your shebs.
"I like the sticks up my shebs, thank you very much. How else would I stand up straight?"

I put absolutely no stock in your personal commentary on the quality of my humor because you have no taste. ┐( ˘_˘)┌
If you have to explain the joke, it's not funny, vod.

as a gurlanin, she technically could shed if she really wanted to
I know you have an underdeveloped funny bone there, N i n e r.
┐(´∀`)┌ but that was the joke, vod.
*shrugs* It's not my fault you're not funny.
therapardalis:
“Well, now it can be your favourite crop-top.” Thera winced a little as she pulled the fabric away. One small mercy was that with the bleeding and Niner’s moving around it hadn’t had a chance to dry and really stick. But as for that bleeding … she reached for a hypospray - started to do so with the wrong hand, given she was usually on the bed herself and facing the other way around.
She’d clean the mess up later, but right now she had to stop him losing any more. “I’m gonna zap you with a local painkiller, then get some pressure on that big one.”
If she’d slowed down enough to think instead of react, it might have worried her that she wasn’t actually a medic. Her first aid was fine, but she was going to have to hope that the medical machines were able to take care of the details. Because even if he hadn’t been a friend, there was no way she was letting a Republic Commando, a combat veteran, bleed out from a knife wound he’d picked up on a night out. Although, speaking of …
“So …” She smirked, still working but trying to lighten the mood, “Who were you wearing your favourite shirt for, then?”
“Fi would never let me hear the end of it if I wore a crop top to the barracks,” he grumbled, silently thankful for the distraction of Thera’s banter.
Niner grimaced as the hypospray pressed against his skin. A quick jolt made him tense. He exhaled and blinked at the white lights on the ceiling. He felt a warm numbing as the symoxin did its work.
“So … Who were you wearing your favourite shirt for, then?” Thera smirked.
The pillow squeaked as Niner adjusted his head to meet her eyes. “I was on my way over here. Wanted to know if you would let me treat you to a drink. Unfortunately,” he looked down at his bare stomach. “I got stabbed.”
Truthfully, Niner was a nervous wreck as he made his way to Thera’s ship. Amazingly, getting stabbed and having several drugs pumped into his system did wonders for his confidence.
Eryn squeezes Niner’s hand gratefully, then, experimentally, bounces on her toes. “Good as I’m gonna get. Nothing’s broken, anyway.” Normally, typically, most beings would take a Mandalorian’s word at face value — but some overzealous son-of-a-Hutt thought he’d gotten a Jedi on his hands instead.
Chakaar.
“Doesn’t the Empire teach their lackeys not to question someone more heavily armored than they are?”
@niner1309 | continued
“Those di’kute can’t shoot straight. The Empire probably doesn’t even teach them how to wipe their shebs properly.”
Niner lowers his viewfinder and clicks his tongue. “There’s a lot of them out there. You made a great impression.”
Gets really, really, really REALLY REALLY close 2 u. 🎉 Pops streamers on.
Niner plucks a streamer out of his hair, unamused. “I see you've been promoted to Delta's party specialist."

Sev: it’s performance art
“Okay, you can shut it now. And you, Fi. Stand down. We’ve all had a bad day, so let’s throttle back on the testosterone and play nicely.” [Niner said.]
-Star Wars, Republic Commando: Triple Zero, page 95

The Delta Squad vs Omega Squad angst is one of my favourite parts in the book. After re-reading this scene, I had to draw Atin and Sev going toe-to-toe. Thankfully Niner was able to step in before things got out of hand.

not gone, merely marching far away
therapardalis:
Shit - ! The blaster clattered to the floor as she caught the sudden extra weight, grabbing with both arms to keep both him and herself on their feet - training and long experience moving cargo crates making that only slightly easier than it ought to be. “A knife - ? Oh Niner, you are absolutely not dying on me until you explain that one!” Especially twice.
The Nocturne’s medical bay was small, and on first glance needlessly crowded. A least until it clicked that the bed and supplies were close together so that someone in there alone had everything within reach. One last burst of strength got Niner onto the low bed, then she dived for a Bacta patch and scissors to cut his shirt away.
“Owe you a drink,” he muttered, exhaling through his teeth as he pulled himself onto the bed. Burning hot pain flared through his side and he bit his tongue, fighting the urge to yell.
He tried to lift his head and see what she was doing while she cut his shirt, but the movement sent excruciating pain up his side. He dropped his head. “That’s my favourite shirt,” he mumbled.
With the fabric out of the way, there were two very clear stab wounds in his abdomen. The one on his side was deeper, but it seemed like the assailant was in a hurry and had missed any fatal organs. The other was in the centre of his stomach, but it wasn’t as deep, as if Niner had been able to grab their hand before the knife sunk any further. The main problem, however, was that there was a lot of blood.

Friendly reminder that (spoiler alert):
In True Colors, Niner fakes a dying man's screams to lure in his opponent for a close fight, and explicitly mentions that he's heard what it sounds like and can mimic it. He screams for Kal Skirata.
Kal once lost a trainee in a live-fire exercise.
Therefore, in all probability, Kal has watched one of his trainees die screaming his name.
"I don't want them to think I'm weak..." [baby!’lari]
Niner strode over to the small Gurlanin and crouched down. He slid his helmet off, setting it down in front of him and grasping her shoulder.
“They won’t,” he said, locking his eyes with hers. “And if they do, you use that to your advantage. Being scared is okay. It’s your body’s way of getting you ready to defend yourself, and all you have to do is use it and not let it use you.” It was a valuable lesson Kal had taught him during training. Niner still remembered the way he said it, taking the words to heart. “Do you understand?”
