What that post covered if I remember correctly is that because Mikasa constantly failed to understand Erenâs true self throughout their lives, sheâs not really in love in the complex person that Eren is with all his flaws and virtues, but in the idea of Eren that she projected herself.
We were seeing this ever since the beginning of the story, and one of the most memorable examples was during the training days when she convinced herself that Eren was relieved that he passed the 3dmg test because he wouldnât have to be separated from her, which was completely false of course:
And she kept projecting her idea of Eren even in this arc, which is why when Eren asked her in chapter 123, why she cares about him and what she means to him, she interpreted it as a romantic question, and couldnât realize how terribly depressed and broken Eren actually was at that time.
She even started thinking that Eren was always like this ever since he was a child, which is another misconception that she now has about him:
And thatâs actually what I said she was thinking after chapter 107:
Sheâs been constantly wrong about Eren, because when Eren saved her when they were kids, she already decided that itâs fate for the two of them to be together, and instead of getting to know him properly, she was filling in those character traits for Eren herself.
An example of that was when Eren and Armin started talking about the outside world, and she felt completely lost in their conversation:
Even though learning about the outside world was always such a massive part of Erenâs life that it made him motivated to join the SC, because Mikasa wasnât interested in it, she turned a blind eye to Erenâs dreams, since it didnât line up with the person she projected Eren to be.
It may be taking longer than I originally thought it would, but I still think Mikasa will eventually realize that her idea of who she thought Eren was, is not who Eren actually is. And by the end of the manga she will finally be able to see Eren for who he truly is, without any of her filters.
And when that happens, she will be able to move on with her life without thinking that she needs Eren by her side to be happy.
