I’ve been a fan of the Beatles for as long as I can remember, thanks very much in part to the fact that my parents constantly played ‘60’s music on our everyday car rides during my childhood. In fact, I can distinctly recall my Mom singing along happily to “Michelle” as it played on the radio. So for me, the music of the Beatles has always been about happy times spent with my family.
And I should add too that music is my cathartic vessel through which I process all sorts of emotions, & oftentimes serves as a coping mechanism when I’m feeling overwhelmed. Not surprisingly then, concerts are my happy place: I can lose myself in the moment and just feel free, in every way.
Fast forward to now, when I am the mom to a 16yo old daughter, and an 11yo son…… who are growing up far too quickly, if I’m being honest 🥲 I’ve made sure to expose them to the music I love, and encourage them to find the songs/albums/lyrics that speak to their true selves ✨ I am a pop music girlie, an elder millennial, and I love my CD & vinyl record collections with a fierce passion ❤️🔥
Which brings me emphatically back to The Beatles, ironically, because for the past year or so my son has literally made the band & their music *his entire personality.* He literally decided to watch “A Hard Day’s Night” on dvd one day last Spring, and that was it: he was reborn a full fledged Beatlemaniac. His Dad and I aren’t complaining, since we already were Beatles fans; but I must say, we weren’t fully prepared for how our 11yo falling head over heels for them was going to pretty much transform our entire family dynamic. Don’t worry though, this has all been positive and a truly a happy journey so far….. because how could it be anything else, right? My son’s enthusiasm, insatiable curiosity about, and just overall love for the Beatles has brought us closer together as a family…. In ways I didn’t expect or think were missing before. And this is a kid whose friends are overwhelmingly into things like Minecraft, Stranger Things, Roblox, and definitely not music that predates the 2000s. He even asked to start taking guitar lessons, telling us that he wanted to “learn to play the guitar like George Harrison,” ….. so now for the past 6 months, 🎸 lessons & practice have become a part of his rituals. My boy connecting with basically everything Beatles = what. a. gift!
So, what am I getting at by sharing all this? I suppose I just wanted to explain a bit about why I am today a massive Beatles fan: because my parents immersed me in the music of the ‘60s when I myself was a child, and because now my own child’s infectious joy for The Beatles has reawakened my passion for their music. I didn’t expect to be parenting a Beatlemaniac in the year 2026, but gosh, I am very grateful to be doing so 🥹✌️❤️
PS: to find Beatles treasures within our budget, we go to estate sales, library bookshop sales, and lookout for “deals” on Facebook Marketplace/OfferUp. It is a real joy meeting other Beatles fans in this way: they are usually super kind, and always very excited to meet a “youngster” who loves The Beatles like they do. These quests for 🪲 treasures are one of the main ways that my son’s Beatlemania has brought us closer together as a family 🙂
