CHAPTER 31:

As Maki walks, the sun comes out.  The clouds haven’t fully been swept away but the sun is peering through, shining down over her. She staggers through shallow puddles that the sidewalk is covered in. Her back is aching, her arms are aching, her entire right hand is aching. She can feel blood dripping down her back, it’s hot and wet and tacky on her skin where it’s starting to dry. She’s positive she’s leaving a gory trail of blood behind her but she hasn’t looked back since she left the King of Hearts. The cool post-storm breeze blows through the gap in the shredded back of her shirt, making her shiver. Her injured hand is still hugged close to her chest, soaking blood into the fabric; her other arm wraps around her middle, her fingers curling into her shirt. She’s losing too much blood and she knows it. There’s a part of her brain trying to remember how much blood someone can lose before they pass out, before it’s too late for them, but she feels dizzy and can’t focus for long enough to figure it out.  It’s taking longer than she’d thought to get to Setagaya from Shibuya.
