What do you think it would take for Lavi to decide to not be a Bookman? I know Hoshino has stated that he is going to become the next Bookman and it’s hard to really imagine because we don’t know his past and why he is so dedicated. However, I want him to have a happy ending!
Given the answers he gave in the last discussion room, I’d say, there is nothing that could deter him from becoming a Bookman. It seems he really does want to be a Bookman, he just doesn’t understand why it has to hurt so much.
We don’t know much of Lavi’s past, only that prior to joining the Order he was very jaded and didn’t understand people, he couldn’t empathise with others - it was a defence mechanism so he could look at piles of dead bodies without pain. But in the Order, when he lived side by side the sort of people he deemed merely foolish in the past, as he got a closer look he started to understand that it’s not that easy. People can make foolish mistakes but most of the times that doesn’t come from malice, it is usually terribly executed good intentions. There is something wrong with us, maybe the cumulative mistakes in the past that we carry, maybe that we can’t escape the legacy of those mistakes. But it’s not as simple as he perceived it to be and now as he experiences these burdens himself he starts to understand.
To me, Lavi appears to be stunted in emotional growth, a sensation indicated by this de-aging sequence. Even though years has passed and he knows much more, he still feels like he hasn’t progressed at all. He cannot understand people’s feelings, he doesn’t know how to deal with his own, and therefore he feels terribly frustrated and isolated. Maybe he was like this from the start, maybe it developed as a defence mechanism to shut out the pain. If he was this emotionally distant in the past, it could be that Bookman’s own aloofness made Lavi feel he was understood and that’s why he accepted to be a Bookman, but it also could be that Lavi wanted to understand why people commit these mistakes.
I really, really wish the best for him, but knowing Hoshino our hearts will be shattered.
