Background

Amba = reference to Mahabharata

Warrier = traditionally associated with temple duties, guardianship, and ancient responsibility

Born 1968 in Thrissur, Kerala to a culturally traditional but middle-class Warrier family

Deeply influenced by Hindu philosophy, particularly concepts of Dharma and cosmic order

Extremely bright; excels in academics, especially political theory and law

1984 – Bhopal Gas Tragedy (Age 16):

Their father, a chemical safety officer, was sent to Bhopal as part of an early response team by the Kerala State Disaster Authority

He dies from toxic exposure. Government denies compensation and accountability.

He died not in the initial leak, but days later from exposure while assisting victims

First personal experience with systemic failure. Plants the seed of disillusionment.

Anti-Sikh Riots / Punjab Insurgency:

Later that year...

Studying in Delhi. Their Sikh roommate is burned alive by a mob

Amba is beaten by the mob trying to save her. Police do nothing.

Caste Violence:

Working as a legal aid volunteer in Tamil Nadu - 1996

Witnesses the aftermath of the Melavalavu massacre, where elected Dalit leaders were hacked to death by dominant caste men

Saw their bodies piled in a ditch

Legal efforts to prosecute the attackers are sabotaged.

Convinced that law protects caste privilege, not the vulnerable.

1999 - Kargil War:

On a government-sponsored peace tour, trapped in Ladakh with their family (husband, son, and daughter) during surprise shelling

Spends five days hiding in the mountains with terrified, dying villagers

Saw villagers lose limbs to stray mortars

Dug makeshift shelters with their bare hands

Watched Indian and Pakistani soldiers die on both sides

Daughter suffers lasting psychological trauma

Stopped talking for a year

Husband leaves them, unable to cope with the stress of their political life

Although their marriage was arranged, his leaving hit them hard

Sees war as cyclical and senseless; fueled by politics, not justice.

2004 – Indian Ocean Tsunami:

On vacation in Alappuzha, Kerala with their children (ages 6 and 12).

Tsunami strikes - both children die. Amba survives.

State response is chaotic, impersonal.

This loss becomes their psychic break: their grief merged with radical clarity: the world must end so something purer can begin

Doesn't get directly involved in fights - however, will take advantage of extremist groups, chaos, and engineered conflicts to get their way
