It's interesting to me how FriendProgram describes their connection with Void as having been not very close because it's like. It kinda makes sense. Despite their solidarity, Void does underline that they're very different from each other and had a hard time understanding one another, and presumably FP was more focused on coping with Tori and retreating to Exe and the other experiments. But they also obviously had a significant impact on each other. It's more obvious on Void's side but it is also mentioned several times that FP has siblings (with Void being the only one they could ever stand) and they clearly do have a Reaction to Void throughout Act 2.
And then in contrast you have like. Each of their connections with Tori and Nick being described in very impactful and even codependent ways. "We were everything we had back then, two miserable programs trying to survive." / "We were the best of friends, we had no one but each other!". There's even a sense of solidarity in earlier stages of these relationships present too, between Tori being the first connection FriendProgram was able to make outside of tests while she was dealing with the grief of loosing Enemy and appreciated having someone else, and the initially lighthearted "bad friends" joke born out of Void and Nick both being outsiders to the Friendship Labs in different ways.
I guess it makes sense that FP's and Void's connections with each of their abusers are generally framed as more significant and close than their connection with one another, considering both of their struggles are strongly tied to isolation. If one of the most important people in your life tells you there is something innately wrong about you, and that they want to fix that for your own sake, you're not gonna have much left besides either believing you're unchangibly bad, or convincing yourself you'll get over all your issues once your flaws have been remedied.
It's obvious that FP and Void are much healthier and have much more positive impacts on each other. When they reunite in the current day, they're able to basically see through each others issues. FP can downplay what Tori put them through and tell themself that their lovelessness makes them morally corrupt, but they can identify that Void's situation with Nick is downright horrific and not something Void should put up with. Void can downplay Nick's actions and tell themself that he's justified, but they're baffled when FP tries to equate morality to love because for all their internalized issues, they've always liked their own lovelessness for being the one thing they had in common with FP.
Void says that they and FP didn't have the easiest time understanding one another, and it makes me think of how we see both of them extend understanding towards the value Tori and Nick hold in concepts like love and friendship (which FP and Void notably feel disconnected from), but aren't granted the same grace. At best, Tori is frustrated about no longer understanding FP when it's less them who has changed, and more just her perspective on them.
Maybe FP and Void weren't close, but there is a reason why Void looks back and smiles at FP before cutting off Nick. There is a reason why FP briefly changes color when Void tells them about how much they value their one similarity, before the color change later becomes permanent as a symbol of self acceptance, just before FP faces Tori.
Maybe, in other areas, FriendProgram and Void didn't always easily understand each other, but they tried. And considering how things were with their former friends, that counts for a lot.
