I just watched a clip of PHM DoP Greig Fraser discussing the shooting of this scene where he explains that it’s lit explicitly so that as Grace turns back to reply to Rocky’s offer he’s not just in silhouette. He specifically had Ryan at an angle in which the he’s framed by the light at the end of the tunnel but the eye is shining with a glimmer of the room Rocky is in.
Fraser is declaring then that the resulting picture here is intentional. Without outright explaining the metaphor, it points out that there was more to that scene than what was being said and done.
Grace had “made peace” with death. In explaining this, he turns from Rocky towards the darkness and the light at the end of the tunnel. But then Rocky’s offer is proposed and he turns, faced with a flicker of hope, literally reflected in his eye.
There’s a story layered under the story. Grace is given the chance to turn away from death. His friend is calling out to him, summoning back from slipping away into the light of oblivion and Grace listens. He accepts the hope that shone in his eye and emerges from the darkness he was willing to disappear into.
And he cannot bear to stand. He cannot bear to speak. He can only retreat from death and bask in the glory of life, opportunity, future, and hope.
And the layers of visual storytelling in this is all unspoken. Directors are the hand that turns the key and drives the car but the people underneath them care just as much as they do. They are also storytellers. They are the engine, the mirrors, the brakes, the wheels.
Every artist contributes to a film beyond what the director’s originally had laid out and that is what takes cinema from video and elevates it to art.
Project Hail Mary is incredible filmmaking because it is love, it is hope, it is art.
