Really insightful and hard-hitting analysis on my sisters copy of the secret history that she annotated when she was 13

I saw a post that I thought was fairly insightful, that suggested trans men are comfortable identifying as lesbians because it is a discrete word and if we did not have that word but simply called gay women gay women as we do gay men, they'd probably not do it, but the word adds a layer of distance or obfuscation. it posed the inverse as well, that you don't see trans women going around calling themselves gay men, precisely because it's degendering.
But, well, I've been around enough trans women to know that plenty of them do indeed call themselves faggots, queens and twinks quite often, without a sense that they are degendering themselves. I mean frankly this is a fairly trivial observation to make.
so rather than the original point it was making, which was a rather pointed observation about the ability of trans men to degender themselves without degendering themselves because of the nature of the English vocabulary for the community, I think the point is more that language in general can be used not only to circumscribe reality but to create a zone of ambiguity, obfuscation and transient meaning, through which people can and do swim both generally and specifically when constructing and communicating their identity.
the only way to be punk is to have an apple a day and brush your teeth every morning and say your prayers before bed
I love the "cific" in "specific". A little bicycle!

i mean in all fairness there's only like 100-125 concepts max so once you've got those down everything makes perfect sense
i am always one wrong word away from being shot by all the people who find me tolerable
there’s nothing wrong with darting out from behind a parked car into traffic
what sucks about berries is that they get moldy in 2 seconds if left uneaten so you always feel pressured to eat the berries as soon as you can but that is an unwise action that has grave consequences if you eat all the berries at once

New research indicates 2 cups of black tea a day can increase human lifespan by up to ten million years
tbh between improved literacy, the increased complexity of ideas, improved mathematics at the higher levels and an improved common numeracy, improved childhood nutrition, longer and more broadly accessible general education, and better healthcare, people probably are on average more intelligent than they were historically in many significant ways (even if they'd lack a lot of meaningful practical knowledge that existed historically)
