Going out on a limb here because I'm sure someone will have something to say, but I'm sick of people saying "here's some basic skincare tips for people intimidated!" and then it's like 8 steps and 5 products. That won't help anyone intimidated by this stuff, speaking as someone in that category.
Super basic skincare for people who have no idea, in order - if you can only do one, do the first. Then increase as ability allows.
1. Wash your face once per day. Just use warm, clean water on a washcloth/face washer.
Plain cotton terrycloth is best, get a few of them. A light colour is better so you can see if it's dirty. Change it out regularly (ideally once a day, but who has the time). I wash my face at night, either before I brush teeth or in the shower, and in the morning, again when brushing teeth. You'd be amazed how much comes off just from a day out, and all that is in up in your pores.
2. Wear sunscreen. Wear it every time you're going out in the sun. Even on a cold day. Get SPF 50+ if possible, a cream. Put it on before you go out. Reapply when it says you need to on the bottle.
It can be hard to find the right sunscreen for you, especially if you have allergies. Going for 'sensitive' and 'daily' sunscreens is a good start. Ask your friends what they wear, especially if they have similar complexions. I can't speak for other countries' sunscreens (I'm Australian) but I see Trader Joe's Daily Facial SPF 40 recommended for the Americans out there.
Remember to put it on your neck and ears, the back of your hands, and forearms (if they're exposed). Put it on tattoos if you have them and they see the sun - it'll help keep them from fading. Wipe it off with your washcloth at the end of the day for less clogged pores.
3. Moisturise. Do it before bed, after you wash your face. You can find a fragrance free, sensitive skin moisturising lotion, usually for cheap, in a massive squirt container - with moisturiser, I really think the less in it (fragrance and other stuff) the better. Put it on your neck as well as your face, your hands, and (bonus) on any tattoos. Wipe off in the morning with the washcloth.
If you can do those, then maybe look into a cleanser. If you can't be bothered with these, you aren't going to be getting into cleansers and masks and retinoids and whatever else. And I say this as someone who can barely be bothered. And the pimple patches the zoomers like work, by the by, but I think only because they stop you picking at it - and that's enough.
