Until now it hadn’t really dawned on him that he needed to think this through. That it didn’t just require showing up with a pretty girl and getting his family off his back for a little while. They were going to ask questions. They were going to need a story of how they got together. Most of them already knew Caroline. They were going to want to hear their entire romantic tale. Slowly his mouth begins to gape open and he meets her gaze, barely able to utter more than a soft umm before she’s already off the subject. Guess they’d talk about it later. “R-right. I’ll uh, I’ll pick you up at six.” And then he’s struggling to find his footing, giving her one more final wave before he’s walking back to his car in a nervous daze. He was so screwed.
Six. He’s going to pick her up at six. She tries not to think about how little time that leaves for her to get ready. Instead, she’s mentally finalizing her outfit, planning out her makeup look, and not thinking about pretending to be Stefan’s date. She doesn’t want to think about the lies she’ll have to tell or how she’ll have to act around him. This is a bad idea, she thinks as she heads home. They’re friends. They’re better as friends. She doesn’t want things to be awkward. She should have said no. Should have, but couldn’t. He’s too cute to deny.
She settles on a simple black dress (it’s the cleanest and easiest one to wear) and pins a few pieces of her hair out of her face. Choosing her makeup was a little harder. With the simpleness of the dress and hairstyle, she decides to go fancy on the makeup (without looking too done up). When she’s done, Caroline looks over at the time. It was nearly six and she doesn’t feel ready. She throws her lipstick, cell phone, and bank card in a clutch that matches her dress.
She’s in the middle of looking for a sweater or a jacket to complete her look when she hears a knock on her door. Damn. She quickly grabs something, taking a few seconds to make sure it matches before she hurries toward the door. She opens it and huffs out a breath. “Hi. Is this too much? I feel overdressed.”
