(Adrian to Grace): retrofitted lights and clear xenonite last month so you can see outside. (Grace to Adrian) that's incredible! I wonder if any of your world's creatures have light receptors? If they do would they be attracted to the light?

Rocky: psst, Adrian

Adrian: Yes, dear?

Rocky: An Asrgestes??? Not that this isn’t insanely cool, but since when could we afford an Argestes?

Adrian: Built this from scratch. Just one of the many century-long projects to distract from the existential dread.

(Cont.) Besides, now that you’re back, we can actually afford like two more ships, and another guiding for Grace if we want.

Been sitting on these for a solid month now so I figured it’s time to post em! AU in which an aging and frail Grace gets his consciousness transfered to an eridian body to extend his life :D

Some notes:

I like to think that once Earth receives the beetles and fixes the sun, they then send another beetle to Erid full of seeds, food, spices, and other care package stuff for Grace.

At that point, they won't know he's still alive, as far as they know, he probably starved to death by then. But Stratt insists they send it anyway. If nothing else, it can be a gift for their newly discovered neighbors, the Eridians. Afterall, what's more friendly than sharing food?

The Eridian scientists study the contents of the care package. It's full of shelf-stable human food that they do their best to clone/replicate for Grace. There are also some seeds that store well for the years of travel they experienced. Radish, lettuce, tomato, beans, etc. (Potatoes would be a great callback to "The Martian")

Grace: I am astro-NOT up for this.

Stratt:

Stratt: Ha, that’s actually a good one. I like that. Anyway-

Love the soft, curious moments of them sharing about their own cultures, biology, etc. I do think Rocky would have a field day when Grace explains skin as a very sensitive and permeable organ with lots of stuff packed tight on the surface. Since goosebumps are very tactile, I thought Rocky would enjoy hearing those.

Also, bonus.

I mean full-on khaki-shorts-wearing, traversing-wilderness-with-nothin'-but-a-machete Adrian who yoinks snakes outta trees and pets swamp puppies and will unflinchingly dig around in elephant faeces for signs of a rare parasitic tapeworm if needed.

Oh, humans eat socially? No problem, Adrian has observed many many animals eat. Did you know that an obscure species of small underground dirt creature from the north side of Erid also eats socially? Adrian can give you a not-so-short presentation on them.

Oh, the human has no external carapace and so its internal sounds are absurdly loud, wet and off-putting? No problem, Adrian was just conducting an expedition last month researching the incredible eridian animal, the Wet Loud Worm from the south-east region of Wet Loud Wormland. They're desensitised, it's fine.

Oh, Grace leaks often from many orifices and it can be a bit of a learning curve to get used to? No problem for Adrian, see Wet Loud Worm paragraph again!

might as well dump a bit of lore for h! adrian (they/them):

-came from an old money clan, only child. parents weren’t that thrilled that their heir was pursuing the sciences, they were more upset when they learned adrian was studying astrobiology of all things.

-met rocky during their time in uni, they didn’t click right away but met rocky again a few years down the road during a scientific conference, then became quite close and dated not long after. married for five years before adrian was recruited into PHM.

-after pulling a few strings, adrian managed to get their spouse on board the project as an engineer. when the entire crew was tested for the coma gene, rocky had the gene and was promoted to secondary mission engineer (uh oh).
