I owe the greatest debt to the #Ferguson and #BlackLivesMatter activists. For over a year, they've been my people, my teachers, my friends. I sat vigil with them through sleepless nights while they lived in absolute terror. I can't afford a billboard ad, I'm not a celebrity, and often when I first stand up, I stand alone. But I give what I got to the people that put their lives on the line to teach me, and the world. I also owe it to the people I teach. I can't tell young people to be proud of their bodies, to be brave, to speak out even if they speak alone...if I'm not willing to do it myself. I've also seen how young people will speak out and feel alone, but then learn that quietly, their bravery spread to others and lifted their spirits. They are my teachers, too. I love people. I hate racism, sexism, classism... And any power-based privilege. It destroys lives and causes trauma that lasts generations. There are a lot of people who are scared to stand up in public. I hope they see that they don't have to be. It shouldn't take a white and semi-nude fat woman to get people to pay attention to the struggles and lessons of People of Color. But if that's the ice-breaker...so be it. And yes, keep talking. Don't ever dare shut up.
