Friday was an odd day.
I've been trying to catch all the sunlight I can these days, so I find myself upstairs camped out on my bed all day, hunched over these #embroidery hoops. I just updated my shop with six hoops I just finished, including this one which is a slightly misleading thumbnail of the group because he kind of stands alone from the others. Anyway, I'm super excited about these in general, as well as adding more embroidery portraits to my roster. Such fun, so much so I'm wondering if I'll ever paint again. Links in profile if you wanna check em out! #embroidery #berniesanders #nobullshit #fibreart

Yesterday's #100botanicalsketches posting delayed due to old + new friend hangs. 005/100 for #The100DayProject // #sketchbook #botanical #succulents
These carnations again, cuz they're gonna die soon. 004/100 #100botanicalsketches #The100DayProject #drawing #painting #paintingbook
This took longer than I would have liked. Seriously considering introducing a timer. In any event, here's hoping they get better than this! This year I'm doing #botanical-inspired drawings/paintings, in one way or another. I'm already frustrated, so this should be interesting. I made a spread today, but I'm thinking of doing single pages going forward so considering posting every-other day for display purposes. ANYWAYS. Anyone from last year participating? #floral #abstract
Endless Winter. The first two weeks of February, I was staying at my parents' house looking after their totally blind Rag doll cat, Zoe while they vacationed in Costa Rica. It was a vacation before a vacation as it turned out, because I did exactly no artwork there and a day after returning home we left for Sosua, Dominican Republic for a week with our friends Jay and Amanda. A trip that was amazing and feels so long ago now, because two days after returning home from that, our ceiling caved in, crashing water all over our stereo and (somehow) worse, onto Adam's beloved record collection. It's a long story full of extremely boring-to-you ups and downs, but after storing the stereo in many pounds of rice while we were out for two weeks while our apartment was being repaired, it works! 150 or so covers of albums were damaged, some rare and all that, and while the topic of renter's insurance does come up, there's not much money can replace on that front. But fuck it, it happens, it's done. And now we have renters insurance and we're ready for another leak! So how many is that, two, plus one in Dominican, plus two, five, basically six weeks away from home sounds about right. And now, April. Hello. You look like December, but worse, because you're being defiant in a way that nobody likes. You go against my code, which is to under-promise and over-deliver, so on that front December has its own advantage. December has really been seducing me these last couple years, and April has been nothing but a cruel bitch since after 2010, that glorious blip that seemingly no one remembers, when March allowed us full-bloom crocuses and open-patios, and I would know because I worked in a restaurant with a patio, praying for rain. Eventually April quietly mingled in dressed as Summer, not a cloud in the sky, much less snow. I prefer that April. Our living room fiasco bought us new pot-lit lighting and a suave barely-there grey paint colour. Adam swapped the furniture while I watched disapprovingly, then suddenly and seemingly inspired by the change I tackled the bedroom, doing pretty much the same. I did six loads of laundry in one day, folded every piece and found myself caught up on clean clothing for the first time in recent memory. Feeling confident with my new domestic capabilities, I used a coupon at Old Navy and bought myself two adult onesies, an item of clothing I saw on a mannequin that is apparently referred to as a "romper". I also somehow convinced Adam to swap me sides-of-the-bed, because I hate sleeping close to the door and he hates sleeping close to the window. Now I wake up every morning with the sun peeking in just kidding I don't because there is no sun, there hasn't been any fucking sun for months. Except for last Tuesday, that was a sunny day. What a fucking tease. But things are looking up! Is my point, I think. Anyway. Speckled in there I did finish up (and commence!) some looming projects, which I will now summarize so that I can feel all caught up and accomplished. Stop reading here if you just come for the rants about the weather. This is long, and I was going to break it up into parts, but I knew if I did that I wouldn't end up posting it, so here we go. An Artwork Update.
Long winded preface to an even longer-winded art update.

I really wanna see the Sand Fairy now. You were so cruel, @awacici.
My friends Joe & Emily at @diasporaclothing modelling the two options of #yokoono totebags available! // these bags are seriously awesome. My bias can’t be ignored as I helped design this one in particular and I am talking about a very good friend, but can I just point out how nice it is that these bags actually fit stuff? The large one fits 25 records, but look at those straps!
I can vouch for the shirts, too. They fit stuff like, boobs, perfectly.
Totebags are made to order and can be purchased at http://diasporaclothing.etsy.com (or find a link in my shop)

Carmel Place, Manhattan NY
Back in October I was approached by Brooklyn-based Monadnock Development to make a series of paintings for their new micro-apartment building in Manhattan. Say whaaaaaat? It's actually the first of its kind in NYC, if you can believe that a city known for its small living spaces is one of the last major cities to implement 'micro' apartments. Each modular unit falls somewhere between 260 & 360 square feet!
Speaking of small, I had just recently resigned myself to painting on smaller surfaces, and suddenly I was asked to paint a bunch of large pieces in a very short period of time, and I obviously said yes, even though I wasn't sure how I was going to pull it off, because I'm not totally insane, just a little bit. In the end it all worked out, as things do, and now I get to reflect on what was by far by far the largest, and most fun commission I've ever done. Maybe it's because it's been awhile since I've attacked a large canvas, but it felt so natural, and well, easy. It's been awhile since I've felt that confidence when approaching a blank canvas. The entire time I felt like I knew what I was doing, but at the same time couldn't wait to find out what it would look like. Shifting colours around, helping it come to be. I felt like I was painting for me, which is the best possible scenario for an abstract commission, I feel. It certainly doesn't hurt when the client trusts you to do what you do.
In the end, I made eight paintings, 48" x 48", to be hung on each floor outside the elevator of the newly completed Carmel Place. They are big and bright and a little wild, and I'm so excited to be part of this project in some way; have a permanent collection of my work hanging out in New York City. I can't wait to visit them when they're all installed.
Endless thank yous to Tobias Oriwol for the unbelievable opportunity. Universe? more of this, please.Â

Frivolous Memory #1
I am twelve, and you have been my best friend forever. We've just returned from a week at a vaguely-Christian sleepaway camp and my parents are still away on vacation so I'm staying at your house. I'm laying in your bed, it's 11:30pm, and you've just jumped up to turn the lights on after deciding your room needed to be vacuumed. "What the HELL are you doing?" I snarl at you, having just discovered the confidence to use curse-words but only mild ones like Hell instead of Heck, etc. "It's ELEVEN THIRTY AT NIGHT." I have one eye closed like a pirate because my glasses are off and if I don't close one eye I'll have double vision, but also my right eye will turn inward and then you'll make fun of me and I don't want to take the focus off your insane behaviour. "It's disgusting in here," you say matter-of-factly, "Look around. it hasn't been vacuumed in a week." I am in actual disbelief. I don't know what I'm looking for. Bits of paper? Dog hair? My mom vacuums three times a week, but even if she didn't I wouldn't notice. I am twelve, I don't give a shit. I wonder what it feels like to care about vacuuming.  God, I don't even care about this! I can sleep through anything, even a vacuum. And I do. Â
When we wake up we laugh about how I sometimes act like an angry old spouse and how you might actually have OCD. Eventually you cook me some burnt eggs with fried bologna. While we're eating, you start snickering uncontrollably. You're laughing so hard only squeals happen, and eventually I realize you've put dog hair in my food. I hadn't noticed, so I don't care, but I call you a bitch anyway. When my mom picks me up, she marvels at the sparkling-clean kitchen, throws me her best side-eye and says, "I wish you would think to clean the kitchen after you use it." I wonder if I ever will.
I have seven copies waiting to be claimed - they start shipping out November 5! I just finished packing up all the pre-orders and I’m ready for the next batch. After that they’ll be made-to-order and shipped directly from the manufacturer. So like, no option for me to write dirty quotes inside. The price will also inflate ever so slightly, as I’ll have no control over handling/shipping costs.Â
Initially, when I’d ordered the ‘prototype’, I opted for the cheaper, economy option, because if I’m honest the costs involved in making this thing has caused me to break out into many a night sweat. I was nervous about charging more than I’d probably be willing to spend on a book. Even the economy version was a kick in the teeth, but when I got it, I realized why they call it economy. Think more Sears Catalogue and less MISC magazine (see what I did there?). So I bit the bullet and ordered the first bulk in Premium, without having ever seen a copy, and when they arrived yesterday and I held the first one in my hands I knew it was a wise decision. This book on a construction-level, is gorgeous. It’s thick, and while softcover, sturdy. The pages are just as vibrant as the original paintings, and it smells real nice too. It also has a good page-flipping sound, as satisfying as the sound of a good French baguette.Â
200 pages of 100 paintings bound together in a simple black cover.Â
