Artist Statement: The work began over a decade ago with a simple observation; I’m getting older and so are my parents. I began photographing them as a way of bearing witness to their ongoing process of aging.
Four years into making photographs, my father was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer. I continued to photograph him during this time, thinking about how his absence would affect me. Less than three years later, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, he passed away. I began to think about how I didn’t know much about him as a person, aside from the fact that he was my father. It made me reflect on who my father was and what choices he made in life that affected the outcome of who I am today as a second generation Filipino American. I felt compelled to learn more about him as my way of processing grief.
Pananglagip is an Ilocano word that encompasses the active process of remembering through ritual. Through the use of photographs, ephemera, and the passing down of oral history, I construct a material narrative that keeps the memory of my late father alive as a way to navigate family history and situate myself within diaspora. Using the color carbon printing process, which relies on manually registering layers of pigmented gelatin on paper to make a print, each photograph is slowly built by hand making each print a ritual of remembrance.

Meet in the Middle (Sresti u Sredini) documents contemporary Bosnia and Herzegovina and the ways in which it is left fragmented by and tethered to its past. Although thirty years have passed since the Yugoslav wars, this nation continues to face seemingly never-ending political, religious and ethnic tensions.
The history of Bosnia and Herzegovina is complex, still unfolding and often overlooked. Western audiences are used to seeing the photographs taken amidst the war or directly after. This series examines what remains long after the world has looked away. It is not just about Bosnia and Herzegovina, but about the human condition and the ways in which this nation’s inhabitants carry on and seek to persist, without the guarantee of ever being whole.
There is a dissonance surrounding these images that I also felt while photographing. I do not belong to this place and I do not speak the language. My relation to this country is shaped by both proximity and distance. My camera is my point of entry. It allows me to explore, connect to and linger while also being an observer.
As a Canadian-Croatian, with most of the paternal side of my family residing in Bosnia and Herzegovina, I recognize myself as both an insider and an outsider; welcomed into private spaces but never quite feeling like I should be there. I find myself extremely aware of the history, the grief that lingers and the questions that may always be left unanswered. This series emerges from these tensions. Rather than seeking resolution, it invites reflection on an impossible place.
