Oh for reference I've never been a rationalist, I came here by way of nydwracu.
nice, you neatly managed to triangulate an even more offensive origin story!
I've never been a rationalist either, but anyone who doesn't performatively hang shit on them frequently enough is dubbed one by proximity.
I have never felt more validated than when @just-evo-now said something along the lines of âwell youâre actually not and have never been a rationalistâ at a party with rationalists in a discussion about the notion of rat-adjacency.
I think some of them are cool and appreciate their perspective on things but mine has a different label that youâve already decided to hate!
I was out there thinking that facts and rational inquiry and so on are good when Yudkowsky was in grade school. As Iâve said before, Iâm not rat-adjacent, the rats are me-adjacent.
I am regularly reminded that this is not true whenever I get into an argument with someone who has not adopted rationalist/adjacent norms for discussion (i.e. almost everyone outside of perhaps some academic philosophy departments).
I consider new discourse norms and vocabulary to be ânot much of anything new,â especially given the tendency of rationalists to re-invent terminology all the time.
Iâm not talking about the terminology. I am referring to treating discussion as truth-seeking rather than point-scoring, which is sadly extremely rare outside of rationalist/adjacent circles.
We didnât invent truth-seeking, and thatâs nothing new. But I do feel that getting an entire community on the internet to embrace it is a genuinely impressive act. Itâs one of the few remaining healthy âwalled gardensâ I know of online - most online walled gardens seem to have become unhealthy echo chambers and hug boxes.
Rationalists are also the most ideologically-tolerant group I know of. Itâs rare to see the combination of a genuine walled garden with strong discourse norms, and the self-control not to weaponize those norms against people who have unorthodox views.
the only âstrong discourse normâ i ever saw on SSC was that it was perfectly acceptable to call trans women âmentally ill men who think theyâre womenâ and you werenât allowed to call the people who said that fucking idiots
