ftr i do think and know that all these interviews like oh you know, venom coming out (but not like that) venom love story (but not like that) are simply INCREDIBLY explicit and straight-forward baiting, but then i did have that on my bingo card.

of course it's also like, bait is only harmful if it's in a trap. piece of cheese that snaps your head off when you go for it, bad. piece of cheese that turns out to be made of paper machè, eh. disappointing, but in a world of freely available cheeses, whatever. maybe i should've just looked in the cheese aisle instead of expecting the cardboard factory to produce it. you know? i don't think i have to, like, be very grave about this or refuse to enjoy it or call it out as particularly more predatory than most marketing or the very existence of these studios. like, venom being the man-assed musclebeast mascot of san francisco and getting emotional about missing his host at a rave, covered in rainbow glowsticks, explicitly "inspired by the lgbtqia" and "coming-out parties", is still fun in that very early 00s way these movies have about them, you just have to be aware (and yes i know the spoilers, yes i know this isn't actually a gay alien romance) that fun aesthetics is what it is. you are now immune to getting baited, you are just coming for what was advertised. think of the alternative, a completely straight-laced movie about eddie brock gravely considering his Demons and Darkness as the symbiote looms over him without a hint of camp. who wants that.

fwiw comments like the "coming out" one WERE clarified in the interview, they're just increasingly losing context. but yes, of course it's ALSO understandable to feel that you're being fucked with for no reason and resent it
