I think I’d like people to say that [my movies] were always ambitious, you know, always trying to do something with most sincere intentions and really trying to be ambitious. I think that’s really all you can hope for. As far as whether they’re any good or not, obviously, I hope people like them but that’s sort of impossible to say, really. - CHRISTOPHER NOLAN.
Academy Award Winners for Best Cinematography: 2024 — Hoyte van Hoytema, ASC Oppenheimer (2023) Directed by Christopher Nolan
"With Oppenheimer, the assignment was capturing human faces, but when we look at a human face, it doesn't end at the surface of the face itself. It's also about what we project onto that face. As an audience, when you look into someone's eye, you're wondering, "What is he thinking, or what is she thinking? What's going on in their brain?" You see an expression, but beyond that expression, there can be a plethora of emotions and thoughts, and that was something that we were very interested in. We wanted to be able to look into Oppenheimer's eyes, fly through them, and then turn around 180 degrees and look through his eyes into the world. We really wanted to embrace the power of projection." — Hoyte van Hoytema for A.frame, February 2024

Tenet (2020) Dir. Christopher NolanÂ
Cinematography by Hoyte van Hoytema
“[..] Nolan’s films may not be autobiographical in the way that, say, Mean Streets is autobiographical, or even E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, but they are personal. Shot under code names frequently borrowed from his children—The Dark Knight was “Rory’s First Kiss,” Inception was “Oliver’s Arrow,” The Dark Knight Rises was “Magnus Rex,” and Interstellar was “Flora’s Letter”—Nolan’s films map out a landscape and mythology every bit as personal to their maker as Scorsese’s dive bars or Spielberg’s suburban subdivisions.” - The Nolan Variations by Tom Shone (2020)

All I have for you is a gesture, in combination with a word: “Tenet.” It’ll open the right doors, some of the wrong ones too.
