Cat PSA
Over the course of running this blog, we have received a few messages about outdoor cats bringing home wild snakes. So, while this is certainly not the first post to bring up the issue, it bears repeating that outdoor cats are extremely damaging to the environment.Â
A number of studies have shown that outdoor cats, along with feral cats, kill billions of native birds, mammals, and reptiles and have even contributed to or outright caused the extinction of entire species. While some, like the Lyallâs Wren, are and were particularly vulnerable due to their limited range, outdoor cats pose a significant threat everywhere. You probably live within the range of an endangered, threatened, or protected species without even knowing it.Â
You can instantly and permanently improve the health of your local ecosystem just by keeping your cat indoors. This isnât even to mention that outdoor cats live statistically shorter, more stressful, and less healthy lives. So, for the sake of your pet and the lives of many vulnerable creatures, donât let them roam.Â
This is all lies. Cats arenât damaging to the environment because they are NATURAL PREDATORS. The article you source from uses a very small amount of studies, and even then, correlation does not equal causation. This is a load of bullshit, and all species that are being endangered are a result of direct or indirect human intervention. The only two continents in the world without native cats are Australia and Antarctica (and Iâm not 100% certain on the Antarctica thing. As for Australia, there are nonnative cats because way back when Pangea was splitting apart, all of (or at least most of) the mammals that ended up on would-be Australia are marsupials, due to a lack of a placenta. Pretty much everywhere else in the world has cats at the top of (or near the top of) the food chain, second only to humans. So are cats dangerous? Fuck yes. Are cats - of any NATIVE species of cats, mind you, Iâm not talking about invasive species here - harmful to their environment? Fuck. No.
Domestic cats are not native anywhere. Their ancestor, the African Wild Cat is native to parts of Africa and Asia, but it is not a domestic cat and is classed as an entirely different species. There are felines native to many parts of the world, such as the lynxes, ocelots, and others of the Americas, but they are not closely related to domestic cats. Claiming that these cats are the same as the introduced domestic cat is flatly wrong. Even with other wildcats, they are species that evolved within their native environment and serve their own important evolutionary niche, which domestic cats disastrously interrupt.Â
Next, if you read the link, youâd see it actually sites as many nineteen other studies for one parameter, which is more than âa very small amount of studiesâ. Plus, even forgoing the article, there are well-documented cases of entire species being killed off by cats. I even linked one in the same post.
Youâre right in that endangered species are threatened because of humans. Introducing nonnative species is one way that happens. Cats are the example here, but there are loads of others. Feral and outdoor cats are an anthropogenic cause of ecological harm. Â
So, are domestic cats harmful to the environment? Absolutely. They are introduced species. They are not native. They kill loads of prey animals which in turn can also harms producers (because their numbers may now go unchecked) and predators (because they now have fewer prey animals to eat). Thus interrupting the entire ecosystem.Â
Iâm mostly responding to this because Iâm confused by the aggressive tone. I didnât call for extermination programs in my original post. I didnât even advocate for T&R. All I asked was that people who let their cats out stop doing that. I even pointed out that doing so is potentially dangerous to the cat. Your tags say Iâm putting the blame on the cats, but I never demanded anything of cats in the post - that would be pointless - I asked humans to stop letting them out.Â
Also, itâs pretty clear you havenât read much of our blog because we point out constantly that humans are harming the environment in other ways. So your tag call-out to âtry accusing more humans of hurting the environmentâ is pretty pointless.Â
You seem to be under the impression that we hate cats. I canât speak personally for admin1, but I actually adore cats. Iâd probably own one if my partnerâs allergies didnât prevent it. But part of loving an animal, any animal, is recognizing the parts of its existence you donât like. In this case, that piece to recognize is that cats, when afforded the opportunity by humans, can be extremely destructive to other species and the ecosystem as a whole.Â
So, again I implore everyone reading this to keep their cats inside.Â
reminder that this is just a thing for the US
Nope, this is a thing for everyone. Domestic cats kill protected species in the UK and around the world, and out-compete or hybridize with native wildcats, threatening their extinction. If youâd read the links in the original post, youâd see the Lyallâs Wren is native to New Zealand, not the US. But hereâs another species extinct in the wild because of cats, this time in Mexico. And hereâs a paper on the global impact of cats and other non-native mammalian predators.Â
Just because outdoor cats are more socially acceptable in certain countries doesnât magically make them less destructive there too. Â

i wish men understood that when women are talking about feminism and rape culture and shit, itâs not just a political conversation. itâs not about being a âsocial justice warriorâ or whatever. itâs about our actual lives being shaped by misogyny since childhood, and the daily reality of living in fear of violence. this isnât a fucking game or philosophical debate. this is our fucking lives.Â
this post is picking up like 100 notes per minute its outta controlÂ
This is the scariest part tbh and also the reason why I couldnât care less what racist anons have to say

if you an adult learn to take sex criticism. Y'all be 26 giving out wack head cause you refused to listen in ya freshmen year of college that you not suppose to bite it like that. You 28 still just sticking dry penis in a dry hole saying âoh..you tightâ NOT AROUSED!!!
I just wish women could have that same energy when it comes to them taking sex criticism though
I wish men had the same energy too guess life sucks huh
Sex criticism from Women: can you warm me up before we have sex.
Sex criticism from Men: can you deep throat my dick while you do a handstand, talk nasty & braid my pubes.
basically emotional manipulation and guilt tripping as social justice praxis is pointless and not sustainable imo. it doesnât promote real growth or solidarity if the entire basis of your activism is stemming from guilt or fearÂ
itâs also worth pointing out that it turns âsocial justiceâ into something uncomfortably like religion. it establishes patterns of behavior that youâre expected to follow, not necessarily because you understand them or agree with them, but because you are afraid of the consequences if you donât. it turns communities of âactivistsâ into self-aggrandizing moralistic pissing contests, where the pecking order is defined by who knows more of the rules, and who is more willing to enforce them on others (usually, by any means necessary). it encourages ideological purity and discourages debate, discussion, education, and subsequent individual and community growth.

Places where reality is a bit altered:
playgrounds at night
rest stops on highways
deep in the mountains
early in the morning wherever itâs just snowed
trails by the highway just out of earshot of traffic
schools during breaks
those little beaches right next to ferry docks
bowling alleys
unfamiliar mcdonalds on long roadtrips
your friends living room once everybody but you is asleep
laundromats at midnight
⢠any target ⢠churches in texas ⢠abandoned 7/11âs ⢠your bedroom at 5 am ⢠hospitals at midnight ⢠warehouses that smell like dust ⢠lighthouses with lights that donât work anymore ⢠empty parking lots ⢠ponds and lakes in suburban neighborhoods ⢠rooftops in the early morning ⢠inside a dark cabinet
galeries in art museums that are empty except for youÂ
the lighting section of home depot
stairwells
â˘hospital waiting rooms â˘airports from midnight to 7am ⢠bathrooms in small concert venues
I just got the weirdest feeling I swear
OK LISTEN THERE ARE REASONS FOR THIS!!!
A lot of these places are called liminal spaces - which means they are throughways from one space to the next. Places like rest stops, stairwells, trains, parking lots, waiting rooms, airports feel weird when youâre in them because their existence is not about themselves, but the things before and after them. They have no definitive place outside of their relationship to the spaces you are coming from and going to. Reality feels altered here because weâre not really supposed to be in them for a long time for think about them as their own entities, and when we do they seem odd and out of place.
The other spaces feel weird because our brains are hard-wired for context - we like things to belong to a certain place and time and when we experience those things outside of the context our brains have developed for them, our brains are like NOPE SHIT THIS ISNâT RIGHT GET OUT ABORT ABORT. Schools not in session, empty museums, being awake when other people are asleep - all these things and spaces feel weird because our brain is like âI already have a context for this space and this is not it so it must be dangerous.â Our rational understanding can sometimes override that immediate âdangerâ impulse but weâre still left with a feeling of wariness and unease.Â
Listen I am very passionate about liminal spaces they are fascinating stuff or perhaps I am merely a nerd.Â
I, for one, appreciate your passion for liminal spaces and thank you for explaining it to the rest of us.
