A walk down Lando Memory Lane - Lando focused GP rewatches
Hungarianย GP 2024
Quick review: I dreaded coming to this race because I was well aware of the controversy but in the end, I was highly entertained because of how nonsensical it was. An actual cabaret. It's very much a case of if I won't laugh I'll cry but this clownery truly, deeply amused me, in the worst way, mostly because how easily avoided this whole fiasco was and how determined everyone was to not let it happen. Ridiculous from start to finish. Like watching a car crash.
I am trying to give a very measured take here but I'm open and willing to discuss this race in length and have my opinion swayed in any direction.
That being said, I will have to rewatch it some time without being so tapped in on the McLaren drama because there is a race somewhere in there.
Tagline: The sad story of Oscar Piastri's first win.
Rating: Put on the clown make up, play the circuis music and watch the whole thing.
Result: P1 to P2
Fair-o-meter: McLaren signing Oscar Piastri forced my hand, so for my own peace fo mind, I had to come up with the system I am committing to, as of writing this. Introducing Fair-o-meter: my test as to whether something was a fair call from the team. It works as such: would you ask your driver the same thing if it was in regards to a different car, and not the teammate. So in this case, if Max was in front, would McLaren be begging Lando to save up the tyres and try not to undercut him? Obviously no. It's that simple. It's not fair to Lando. Case closed.
I owe my soul to the company store: Now, here's the caveat: teams don't have to be fair. In the end, what matters to them is the result and the drivers are employers, so they can and should make calls that they deem best for them. Unfortunately, that means that they are also free to exercise their God-given right to stupidity and. Well...
Strategy Room: McLaren, guys, what the Hell have you been thinking and how are you still alive after what looked like a lethal dose of humiliation? It's one thing to just mess up strategy like in Silverstone but what was happening here was frankly unbelievable in how much of a situationโข๏ธ you managed to get yourself into.
Quick rundown. We were at two-stopper and McLaren has pitted Lando first both times and repeatedly told him not to undercut Oscar and slow down. Second time around it was done as a reaction, allegedly, to protect P2 and P1 from both Lewis and Charles who were behind and just boxed. Unfortunately, even with Will breathing down his neck, Lando undercut Oscar. Then, he proceeded to build up a whooping 6s gap to him and in the end, as per team orders, he gave Oscar position back. Those are dry facts.
Piastri o~o moment: It is important to know that this situation had roots in Oscar making some crucial mistakes. And like, it's fine. It happens. But be aware they were costly: at one point he had a very comfortable 4s gap behind and he went of - all on his own, nobody was around - which shaved 2s off of that and likely forced team's hand a little bit and made the undercut possible in the first place.
I saw people arguing that Oscar was faster, that he was listening to the team and managing his tyres and that's why he didn't catch up to Lando, but I think evidence suggests otherwise.
1. Oscar was told by his RE that once he'll get to Lando, they will swap positions but they want to avoid Lando having to give up a lot of race time. (L51) I think this suggest Oscar was expected to get to him.
2. Will tells Lando straight up on L64 he can't catch you up.
3. Oscar was on new mediums. Lando was on used mediums. True, Oscar quite possibly wrecked his ones after another trip into the gravel on T12 but that is on him, I'm afraid, since there was nobody around.
4. If he could, why didn't he? Don't tell me he was saving up tyres 12 laps till the end, come on, be for real.
Also, take this with grain of salt because it's purely my evaluation, the quality doesn't always come through, all that , but, like, Oscar's tyres looked super dead at the end of the race. No wonder he couldn't catch up.
So, yes, McLaren screwed both of their drivers over but it wasn't fully fully on them.
Messy boots: I know this situation has been beaten to death so I won't make this longer than it needs to be. I know I don't have any sway on f1blr but still, I don't watch to open any wounds. I will say this, however: what McLaren did was the antithesis of racing. Not letting your drivers race each other is bad enough but - and I want to drive this point home - they weren't merely asking Lando to move over. They were asking him to slow down and let the teammate through is something else. And not because they were going to attack someone up ahead. For a win! You have to see this is insane.
It all boils down to two problems McLaren always struggled with. Number one: Mclaren are cowards. They will always go for safest call and it was their cowardice that dictated that ridiculous call to pit Lando first. Was he really under threat from Lewis and Charles? Really?
Also worth noting, at very least, with Mercedes and Bottas, James Vowels had enough guts to call in himself. Call me sceptic, but Andrea Stella would never.
As for the problem number two...
Obligatory Lando glazing: I don't think there is a single driver on the grid who, upon being given those team orders and that strategy, would give this position back. Even Crofty wonders, on L61: Would Max Verstappen move over? (I think we all know for a fact he wouldn't, Brazil 22?) Would Lewis Hamilton move over? (I highly doubt it.) Would Fernando Alonso move over? (I doubt even more.)
Lando was out in a situation where he had to compromise his own race and McLaren's pit wall basically crossed their fingers hoping he will listen. I just cannot wrap my head around the fact that McLaren saw how the race was progressing and decided not to act, banking their entire strategy on Lando being nice guy.
And that they were right.
My thorn: That start was not great. I am on the fence of it being fully Lando's fault, though, since he had confirmed throttle problems just before the race and McLaren said it's all fixed and good but I don't trust like that.
Tin Foil Hat On: Speaking of lack of trust. Will, post race, says: As we said this morning, mate, many more opportunities. Which is... interesting thing to say to a driver who starts on pole, isn't it?
I don't want to come up with some elaborate conspiracy theory but... There's something so weird about how this race was handled. I was talking about it to my sister and at the end she asked: why? And truth be told, I have no clue. I just don't understand why any of this was necessary.
Realistically, it's much easier to be an idiot than a mastermind and I will always consider incompetence before malice.
Andrea Stella in the race report says: Lando giving the position back embodies the values of what it means to be part of the McLaren Formula 1 Team and the culture we instil (sic!) of being one team and putting the interests of the team first. So the tin foil hat theory is that there is no tin foil hat: The team made mistake and was scrambling to cover it up in name of fairness but the situation spiralled out of their control and they decided to double down because they are horrible in crisis.
Keeping it fair section: Sadly my attention was somewhat ruled by McLaren stupidity but when I could lock in on something else... Man, that Lewis' drive was amazing. I know, he's the best in the world and all but man it's so satisfying to see him driving. No wonder Nico sung him praises at the post race interviews, I would too!
Bonus for Yuki in points and pulling off one-stopper. Sorry I didn't see much of it.
Fs in the chat: This is section for people who were done dirty by something out of their control - or it's supposed to be, I'm probably very inconsistent - so Pierre for DNF. Second in the row, ouch.
And Lando. We can argue about the swap and its validity, but truth remains that the team didn't let him race Oscar, so he was robbed either way.
Broadcast notes: Camera was on fire. Absolutely insane shots on the T14 and everything looked so dynamic and sharp. I loved it, whichever crew was responsible, incredible job showcasing just how cool this sport is.
Camera on Lando's car was crazy, though. It seemed much looser than what we usually get.
L20: Box with information that Max is YET TO PIT.
L48&L50 Lando's onboard camera was doing sbinalla on this lap.
L63 Typo in Max's radio transcript: = whatever, man.
Also, nearly all of Lando's radio was blasted on main. F1TV looooves drama!
Enemy of my Enemy is my Friend: This race was so bonkers I found myself agreeing with Martin the Commentator. But legit, he had solid takes today.
He is known Max defender so I was shocked to hear him be critical and dolling out potential penalties Max's way.
He defended Lando, saying that both McLaren drivers were obeying team orders, not just Oscar. (L59)
Then, at L67, he defends Lando's right to race his teammate. Do you realize how insane is this coming from that man?
Brush with the Fourth Wall: This is more me having fun but Crofty L57: We didn't see it onboard but he's been gaining but there goes Verstappen in T4. Charles Leclerc needed a bit of DRS to try and stay ahead there. It didn't happened. Max Vertappen has now get his man.
Funny bit: L30 Crofty: Russell-hussle operation! (about George trying to get past Yuki)
Fashion corner: Lando's truly beautiful helmet.
Biblically accurate Alonso DRS train: Around L6 and people pitted the hell out of it as soon as they could.
Fastest Lap Lando: L5, L49
Good Guy Will count: 2
Mark Webber Jumpscare: 1 (L58) Bonus for Multi 21.
Saltburn: Will. You deserve to be dragged to the town's square, put in stock and have rotten vegetables thrown at you. Starting from the fact that he clearly didn't want Lando to finish P1 - don't come at me. He didn't - to this weird emotional warfare he was doing... Good grief, the stuff that came out of his mouth... I would have retired and went into hiding, this was so deeply embarrassing. People are right to drag him through the mud.
I know people say he was threatening Lando on radio during the race or manipulating him and in a way, kind of, sort of, he was. But also Will is very bad with words and has this overtly dramatic style, especially when he has time to prepare the line, so to me it didn't sound all that gravely serious.
But I take issue with something else, actually. Will telling Lando it really doesn't matter about Lando losing out on P1 is so revolting to me. Out of everyone, Will should know how much of a sore spot it was for Lando to have no race wins and to just let all of this happen is. Okay.
Natlane special: If you are not proud of your win, you don't deserve it.
People keep commenting that Oscar was calm about this victory and like... I say this with all sympathy in my heart, but why wouldn't he be subdued? However you want to look at it, his first win was given to him by his teammate on team orders and I don't think it matters whether he thought he deserved or not.
And boy, you're gonna carry that weight a long time...
Thoughts:
Ah, dreaded Hungary 2024.
And still, no Radio Transcript. That means I am going in handicapped.
Pierre starting from Szczebrzeszyn.
That is real word and real place.
Oh no, Lando P1, Oscar P2. Worst case scenario.
Lando with reported throttle problems. Sigh.
Lando radio checks twice.
Oh, shit. Bad start. We fell behind Oscar, Max and Lewis.
Sorry, I can't do it.
I have been putting this off for days now. I'm locking in.
Okay. What happened was Lando tried to keep both Oscar and Max behind, Oscar made a very bold move into T1, pushing Lando to the side where Max was and Lando - to avoid crash - had to let him by and then Max overtook Lando off the track.
Max also almost backed Lando into Charles.
Thankfully, Lando managed to get ahead of Lewis and we are P3.
Obviously Lando complains on the radio about Max and like, yeah, he's right. He's so right that even Max's #1 simp and defender Martin the Commentator says Max should give that thing back and it's undefendable...
L2 Will: Lando, we've informed Race Control by the regulations they should give the position back or face more severe penalty. DRS enabled. Will... ๐คฆ Blasted on main.
L2 Martin the Commentator: People at McLaren were watching [the start where Oscar got very close to Lando] from behind the cushions.
L4 Max essentially says he thinks they should risk penalty.
After deliberation, he gives position back to Lando but is very salty about it. Commentators say that after revision and some self-reflection, he might understand why it happened. Okay, yeah, I'm sure.
L5 Commentators are really nice and understanding about Lando's start which is weird.
L8/9 Will babbles about plan A and to manage pace.
L10 I am repeating after Anthony the Commentator because I just don't have it in me to keep Oscar's onboard open but apparently he got told to manage tyres as soon as L2, for which he is mocked by the Commentators, maybe rightfully so. The trauma from last year is still real.
L11 Oscar gets praised for being calm on the radio. No comment from me on that.
L12 Will: Any updates?
Lando: Um, no, not at the moment.
You'll get your chance to yap, Will, don't you worry.
L13 Will: We believe our race is with Verstappen. Continue to open the gap, this is good. Sure...
The above message is blasted on main and the Commentators are deeply flabbergasted as to why the Hell isn't Lando told to race Oscar ahead.
Yeah, curious.
L17 100% pace for Lando.
L17 We're boxing. Remember when we used to have Landopitlane? I miss her!
Martin the Commentator says it's safe to pit Lando because gap to Oscar is too big for an undercut.
Still, Lando has a very violent entry into the pit lane. 2.8s, hards, P5.
Will: We are not trying to undercut.
L18 Will: We'll need to go long on those tyres. Translation: So slow down!!!
L18 Max complains about everything in his car. Meanwhile Oscar pits and comes out P4. As was the will of Bruce McLaren himself, watching this race from up above, no undercut as promised.
L18 Will: Lando, we've potentially stopped earlier than ideal so this is a cruising run on this tyre. The pace in the car is there. Then why pit him so early, pray tell?
L19 Martin the Commentator wonders why Lando has to race Max and not his teammate. Valid question.
L21 Will still on Lando's case about plan A.
L28 Alex complains about Williams messing up the strategy. People are in the mood!
L30 Will: Lando, one thing to think about, if the SC came out now, it would be pretty bad but in 2, 3, 4 laps or so, we might be forced to take it. That might mean another stint, what are your thoughts? Will... ๐คฆ
L31 Will, after no answer from Lando: Perhaps a simpler question is, would you be able to restart those tyres and do another 15 laps?
Lando: I mean, I think yes. But, yeah, a little tricky.
Will, I want to violently shake you.
L31 We're 4.3s to Oscar. Oof.
L31 Will: Gap to Hamilton now is full 4.7.
Lando: Yeah, I want the gap ahead and I need to know where I can go quicker, cause [impossible to hear]
Will: I'm about to tell you! <- both of them sound so sassy
L32 Ted the Commentator praises Oscar to high heaven about tyre management.
L34 After being praised, Oscar has abysmal lap. Slowest out of anyone on the grid. Apparently he went off in T11 and lost 2s to Lando.
Anthony the Commentator says Lando has been given a lot of instructions. This I can agree with. A hint coming from the other side of the garage clearly. This I'm not so sure.
L35 Will: Both cars struggling with the rears. I know you know, we need to avoid those snaps.
L35 Yeah, Lando is 1.9s to Oscar. Yikies.
L36 Not to worry, Will immediately sees this situation and tries to remedy it: The key here will be to get to mid-40s and both windows are open, please confirm.
L36 Max complains about tyres. He's having a day.
L37 Oh no, Pierre is out. Hydraulic leak, I'm told.
L38 Crofty wonders if Oscar lost time with backmarkers. I'm quick to answer: No. Esteban was never in front of him. Lando had to pass him, but not Oscar.
L39 Will: Lando-
Lando: Gap now?
Will: 1.3. Okay to race the papaya car but still. The mid 40s. <- blasted on main
L41 Will: This lap, T4, unacceptable. You need to back off for tyres. <- Then why did you tell him it's okay to race??? Surely you knew the tyres would wear off?
Anthony the Commentator notes the team doesn't want Lando to be fast, which...
L42 Max complains about being undercut and he is being very unhappy.
L42 Oscar gets told they won't try to cover Lewis who pitted. Lando gets told the same thing, almost word to word.
L43 Crofty says Lando could potentially pull an undercut on Oscar and if McLaren weren't cowards and let their drivers race, he should.
L44 Oscar allegedly says his tyres are okay. I say allegedly because I am not going to his onboard. It already feels like I've been watching this race for hours.
L45 Change of plans! Will: The gap to Hamilton and Leclerc is 25.5. We will box to cover them.
L45 Commentators clown on Will for saying Lando's speed was unacceptable. Rightfully so. Throw tomatoes at that ridiculous man.
L45 It begins.
L45 Lando box. 2.3s, used mediums, but scrubbed down. P4.
L46 Tom tells Oscar that Lando pitted to cover Lewis and they will manage this situation. At the same time, Lando is told not to undercut Oscar and Will insists on gentle introduction.
L46 Lando locked up a little at the exit from the pits, probably because he was very close to Zhou - not that Will told him that.
L47 Will: Lando, it's already happened. <- it being the undercut, possibly.
L47 Oscar pits. 2.9s, new mediums, P2, Lando ahead.
L47 Will: We'd like to reestablish the order, at your convenience. 1.8s ahead of Oscar.
L48 Huh, okay, so maybe McLaren is to be blamed for only 98% of this situation and the other 2% are on Oscar for going off the track yet again.
L49 Will tells Lando to look after the tyres.
Meanwhile Anthony the Commentator says that Lando is pulling this gap to make the decision to swap the cars harder for the team. Yeah, I love the optimism here.
L51 Will: Lando, mate, we're not happy with this level of tyre saving. 20 laps to go.
L52 Will: Radio check, please.
Lando: Yes, loud and clear.
Will: Okay, save tyres into T4 and T11, then, please.
L53 Will: Thank you, we're happy with that level.
L54 Max is so pissed at GP.
L55 Will: The position behind is Oscar, 3.8s behind. Then Hamilton and Leclerc at 12 and Max is right behind him. We need to save more tyre please and we need to let Oscar through.
Lando: You should have boxed him first, then, surely, no?
Will: Doesn't matter.
Lando: I mean, it does. To me, maybe.
L57 Will: We still think you're using the tyre too much T4, T11 and the rear exit T6, T9. Oscar is 3.5s, I know you'll do the right thing. <- blasted on main and Will, please, you have to know how this sounds.
L58 Will: Hiroshi is stressed about tyre reduce - Will, stop lying to me. Is he really that stressed? 12 till the end? Please, give it a rest and say what you really mean. - But a question for you. Safety Car with more than 8 laps to go, would you take it?
Lando: Yes.
L59 Will: T4, T11, it's gonna get boring.
L60 Ted the Commentator: If Andrea Stella has to intervene, he will. Yeah, right, as if. I have never heard that man on the radio.
L61 Will: 10 laps to go. We think both cars are using the tyre too much. Just remember every single Sunday morning meeting we had.
[pause]
Lando: Yeah, tell him to catch up.
L61 Crofty: They're getting into emotions. ... You're gonna have to look your teammate square in the eye when you've cost him victory.
First, it was the team that potentially cost Oscar victory and second... You know, a case could be made that it was Oscar who cost Lando victory as well. After all, Lando didn't exactly make any mistakes. Yes, the start wasn't great, but after that he drove quite spotless race, so...
L63 Will: Lando, he can't catch you up. You've proved your point and it really doesn't matter.
Lando: He's on much quicker tyres - [impossible to hear] - I mean, I would have tried to undercut anyway. If I did, I could have done more.
Will: Mate, we did this pit stop sequence in this order for the good of the team, every point counts-
Lando: Yeah and I'm fighting for championship. No? Am I not?
Will: I'm trying to protect you mate, I promise. I'm trying to protect you.
L63 Oh my! Max fully sends it into T1 and locks up and does Monza '21 on diet, almost collecting Lewis with him as he goes off the track. I wish I was looking at the actual racing instead of having to focus on the Papaya Soap Opera...
L63 Max: [Lewis] moved under braking. No. He didn't.
GP: I'm not even gonna get into radio fight with other teams, Max. ... It's childish, on the radio, childish.
GP doesn't even know what circus is happening on the other line.
L66 Will: 5 laps to go. The way to win a championship is not by yourself, it's with the team. You're gonna need Oscar, you're gonna need the team.
Yeah, and how true did that turn out to be?
Btw Lando is 6s ahead.
L67 Will: Lando, there is no threat behind. Hamilton is 20.3, Leclerc, then Max, if there's a SC now, it's gonna make it very awkward. Please, do it now.
I don't know how many Willโฆ ๐คฆI have left in me.
L68 Lando slows down so much it almost looks like he's stationary.
Oscar gets past.
L68 Lando: You don't need to say anything.
L68 Crofty brings up solid point which is, what are team orders now? Because Lando doesn't get told anything in terms of, like, if he's allowed to race now...?
Lando is P2, in the end.
He's still a sweetheart and waving to Oscar post race and congratulating him afterwards.
And Oscar, you're such a fake fan not to know the last McLaren 1-2 was in Monza '21 with Daniel and Lando. You're making it very difficult to defend you.
Also props to Nico Rosberg for clocking him with You said [the race] is under control, but the team order situation didn't seem very much under control from the outside.
