How a new alphabet is helping the Fulani people write its own future.
Man, talk about leaving a lasting legacy <3
How the mind wanders
Laying here as the world creaks, thinking of fleeting impressions; ghostly thoughts. Images of sun-drenched boulevards, carefree the only currency. Of neon faces and tear-stained cheeks, sparkling like crystal despite the ruddy glow. Of tortoiseshell and shells and turtles, of old flames and fires that will burn eternal. The creaking ceases for a moment, as if transfixed by these photo memories, but it is just my imagination. The world stops for no-one, least of all one lost in the slideshow of thoughts running wild
Word to the wise
If you're looking to have Netflix and chill, make sure the Netflix isn't a documentary on class inequality.... total mood killer.

Letters and a late night alone
An early departure
A threat, well rehearsed
This coffee, though sweet,
does nothing for my thirst
No peaches, ten apples
One pair of shoes
Thirty thousand days
Not a minute to lose
Good Morning Poetry
How softly you settle into the horizon taking with you the light that sweeps the day away into a lasting memory⌠Image My Own

Not gonna lie, stole this from reddit, but I felt like the majority of people in my Tumblr circle would appreciate this :D
http://www.citypages.com/restaurants/a-plan-to-turn-hiawatha-golf-course-into-minneapolis-first-food-forest/416059773
this is awesome đ
The city would plant everything from raspberries and blackberries to maple trees and hazelnut trees, as well as shoreline plants like katniss (also known as duck potato) and medicinal herbs like echinacea.
Imagine a forest filled with edible plants, berries, hazelnuts, and maple trees, bordered by hiking trails. A place where you can learn to forage and harvest while enjoying a beautiful lake and natural wetlands.
Now imagine that the forest is located on the edge of Minneapolis.
This is what Ryan Seibold and Russ Henry are trying to create near Lake Hiawatha.
Parts of the nearby Hiawatha Golf Course have been closed since a 2014 flood, and are expected to reopen this spring. This spurred the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board to explore options for rebuilding the course to make it more flood resistant.
Yet these plans stalled when it was discovered that the board was pumping more groundwater from the course â and into the already-polluted Lake Hiawatha â than allowed by the state. The city was left to decide whether to keep pumping or let the former wetland reclaim its territory.
Henry, a landscape designer who is running for a Park Board seat, says replacing the course with a food forest would turn a big problem into a big benefit.
The restored wetland would act as a natural filter, blocking major pollutants from storm water sewers and bringing back animals and plants displaced by the course, he says.
Put simply, a food forest is a woodland that uses native trees, shrubs, and plants that are both edible and medicinal. The city would plant everything from raspberries and blackberries to maple trees and hazelnut trees, as well as shoreline plants like katniss (also known as duck potato) and medicinal herbs like echinacea.
Intended to be low-maintenance and self-maintaining once established, the plants are designed to not only build soil but to attract pollinators. (Plants like milkweed are especially beneficial for bees and monarch butterflies.)
According to Seibold, the plants would be available for people to forage and harvest as needed. The idea is to teach people to understand the connection between plants and animals, as well as learn when to harvest sustainably.
âYouâre growing the food, but youâre also growing the community around the food,â Seibold says.
There would have to be some sort of foraging training to ensure the plants are available for everyone, Henry adds.
When he got his first job in a nursery 20 years ago, Henry says plants were just green things he couldnât begin to tell apart. Since then, nature has opened up to him, and he would love for the kids of Minneapolis to have the same opportunity.
By learning more about what theyâre able to take from nature, Henry says that people might feel more empowered to grow food in their own yards, to embrace nature and sustainable development, and to encourage friends and neighbors to do the same.
Seibold and Henry say theyâve been getting positive feedback. The park board has until July to decide what to do with the land, but Henry says it may have already decided to reconstruct the golf course.
Either way, the men will continue their work.
Seibold is working with the board to establish a fruit and nut tree orchard on the east side of the lake, and Henry is helping to coordinate a food innovation lab on March 16 in the Food Building in northeast Minneapolis. The event will showcase ideas for ensuring better soil and water quality, as well as new harvesting techniques and agro projects.
FUCK YEAH WE DONâT NEED NO GOLF COURSES
Finally someone is going to do something with misused golf course land!
YES
MORE OF THIS PLEASE
jeff bezos: now that iâm the richest man on the planet with a net worth of over 100 billion dollars
jeff bezos: how about i create new ways to fuck over my employees and underpay them
jeff bezos: iâve got it, iâll legally not pay them while theyâre still on the clock, and iâll get the supreme court to agree with me
me:Â
Jeff Bezos currently has a net worth of $133.2 billion.Â
Itâs remarkable to me that he could personally afford to fix Puerto Ricoâs critical infrastructure, and still be among the top 10 billionaires in the USA afterwards. He could afford to completely repair Puerto Rico and still have enough money to be in the top 20.Â
Jeff Bezos could afford to personally end world hunger for a year and still be among the top 10 US billionaires. He could feed the entire planet for 3 years and still be in the top 20.
If you had $133.2 billion in a savings account with an interest rate of 0.06% (the average rate), you would receive $79.9 million in interest every year without having to do anything. All he needs to do is keep breathing, and he will make 57 times more this year than an average US citizen will make in their entire lifetime.Â
He could spend $80 million this year and would not even notice its absence.
Itâs estimated that it would take $55 million and a year of work to fix Flint, MIâs water supply.Â
Iâm just saying.Â
And if he did even ONE of these things (or even pay his employees a reasonable wage), it would change the public perception of him immeasurably. Even put him in the running for Nobel Peace status if he really put some thought into it. With little effort and money he wouldnt even notice missing.
And yet......
Says everything we need to know about the man, huh?Â

In case anyone still plays this...
waitâŚ.are any americans aware that the cia overthrew the democratically-elected premier of iran in 1953 because he wouldnât concede to western oil demandsâŚ.and how that coup was the reason for the shahâs return to power, the iranian revolution, and the resulting fundamentalist dictatorshipâŚ..like, america literally dissolved iranian democracy and no one knows about it???
No. No we donât know about it.Â
Americans arenât told this shit.Â
The only thing weâre taught about any Middle Eastern country in school is that 1) the region exists 2) itâs where The War is happening and 3) Muslim people live there. Thatâs it. Maybe if youâre lucky youâll get into the Hammurabi Code and some early Babylonian stuff but American schools seem to think that if it happened outside Europe and before the colonial period, or makes America look bad and isnât about A Very Watered Down Version of What Slavery Was, itâs not important.
Info on this is almost notoriously hard to find. Itâs not in any texts on American and Russian involvement in the Middle East during the Cold War that I can find. You have to specifically look for a book about the Shahâs return to power, and even then youâd be hard pressed to find a book like that at your local bookstore. Once you get into some higher level college courses you might know about it, but the people who can afford those are more likely to already be indoctrinated into a certain Way of Thinking (read: theyâre racist as shit) by the time they get there. And itâs almost like you have to know about it beforehand if you want to find information on it.
The only reason I knew about it is because thereâs a thirty second summary of the event in Persepolis. Those thirty seconds flipped my entire worldview.
âAll the Shahâs Menâ by Stephen Kinzer is a good, accessible text for people who want to know more about this.
I had to explain literally this to one of my co-workers, who is so fuckin racist against Middle Eastern people itâs insane.
Sheâs 60. She never heard of this.
As I was explaining this and how, during the Regan years, we funded Osama Bin Laden to fight against Russia, leading to the destruction of much of the infrastructure in the region, one of the plant workers came in to get his badge fixed.
He works in the quality control lab. He served 15 years active duty in the Army. Super smart guy, has a masters in chemistry and another masters in biology, raises saltwater fish in his spare time for sale, has the saltwater aquarium setup of the gods.  Raises rare corals too, some of which he donates to be used in re-seeding reefs around the world, but thatâs a side tangent.
And he listened for a minute, then nodded and said âYeah. I was there during that. I helped train people to fight. They wanted us to help them build schools and hospitals, after, but we were only interested in them as cannon fodder. Left the whole area in ruins. I wasnât surprised when they hated us for it later. Told people then it would happen. We let them know then that they were only valuable to America as expendable bodies. Why wouldnât they resent us for that?â
And she just looked floored.
âSoâŚâ She started, after a few minutes. âWhat do you think of Trump?â
âI hate him. Heâs a coward and heâs going to get good people killed.â He didnât even blink. â
She looked back and forth between us for a second, and then asked how I knew all this.
âI research things.â I said. âGoogle is great.â He nodded enthusiastically.
And she just sat there for a second and then said, really quietly, âI didnât know.â
She lived through it.
American schools donât teach you any of this sort of thing.
A great place to start, if you want a broad idea of what America did all around the world over the course of several presidents, is a Netflix docuseries called Oliver Stone's Untold History of the United States - from there you can go hunt down whatever specific time period/conflict you are curious about to get the fine details.
Warning though, you may kinda hate the system once you're done watching... if you dont already lol
(Also, after watching it through, I can solidly say that EVERYTHING would be different today if one man had been 6 steps closer to the podium... you'll see...)
Daffodils
Buried not so far

Dormant, soon to burst

Abiogenesis
It's cold and dark outside
but only one of those is true where I am.
She's fitting things together nicely
and I'm thinking about how life began.
My nose whistles.
My ear is ringing.
And everything

Just like the cold, dark universe
promised.
This is great thank you
