i feel like it makes both piggy and ralph seem really two dimensional .? like piggy being the one who understands the gravity of what they did while ralph brushes it off just feels like a very surface level interpretation of both their characters like oh the Smart one is Smart and classic dismissive ralph dismisses it idk

it’s just a disservice to both their characters in the end #tome it makes more sense for piggy to rationalize BECAUSE he’s so smart that he builds a defense to preserve his sanity while ralph would put his own feelings over it since he’s not as much of an overthinker

Ralph on the other hand is not equipped to cope with that. He knows what they did, and will not put in place the logical barriers to preserve himself.

I always loved how politicial Piggy's response feels - it's the dodging around responsibility, looking for plausible excuses. And I think that taking it away from them takes away one of the strongest lines that Ralph gives in the book:

"I'm frightened. Of us. I want to go home."

"How can emptiness be so heavy?"
