You cannot have abolitionism without engaging with anti-psych because
a) psychiatric inpatient institutions are frequently used parallel with prisons and for the same purpose
b) punitive justice and psychiatry are two outflows of the same theoretical framework. The Criminal and The Mad are two abstractions used to identify a type of person who is hopelessly irrational and/or evil and can only be dealt with by aggressive removal from society
c) any meaningful rehabilitative or transformative process that involves engaging with disordered or delusional thoughts rests on compassionate, continuous care and support which, spoiler alert, the current psychiatric institution Does Not Provide
d) any restorative or reparative justice requires us to get way better at responding to the outcomes of trauma, which at this stage are figuratively and often literally criminalised through madness
e) criminality and psychiatry both use the same systems of punishment, institutionalisation and isolation which personalise the problem (we have to get the Scary Bad People dealt with) and worsen it (removing a person from society, restricting access to basic needs, and treating them as an unperson doesn't help them cultivate trust and prosocial behaviour)
like it's not just that involuntary psychiatric holds are a form of imprisonment (which they are) and that if you oppose one form of imprisonment you oppose them all (you should)
but like. Criminality and Madness are constructed side by side as complementary parts of the carceral machine. Having an abolitionism that doesn't engage with Mad theory and anti-psych activism is as flat. shallow, ahistorical and useless as an abolitionism that doesn't engage with race, class or slave labour.
They're the same thing. Not things that are shaped similarly. Madness as a construction is intimately linked with the development of contemporary ideas about criminality and criminal justice. The history of psychiatry is the history of criminology, even when it doesn't relate to people who've been accused of actual crimes.
