A character trait/dynamic that I'm endlessly compelled by is someone dealing with (or, like, failing to) being the child of people who were too busy being good people to have the time and attention to be good parents. This can be anywhere from 'was a public defender who gave a shit working 60 hour weeks with basically no vacations' to 'left their family behind to join the revolution/war effort and is now a universally beloved martyr-hero who saved/remade the world with their final breath' on the groundedness spectrum. The important thing is a viscerally felt but confused and ugly mess of longing, resentment, and guilt about feeling the resentment.

Summary: Kija is stuck. Following in his father's footsteps, all he can do in the fine arts world is try to earn a name for himself. But just dredging up inspiration proves difficult enough, let alone when he's so terribly distracted by things he cannot have. So when Jae-Ha offers an opportunity, an album cover, Kija jumps on it. Maybe this project will get him back on track… or ruin their friendship forever.

This is such a great fic! It explores Kija and Jaeha in an interesting light in this AU, and I love the way it digs into their relationships with art and what it says about them. It's a great fic, please check it out.

aro!jeha is fun to think about tho. the author asks “how did jeha love moran? as a friend? as one loves a god? as one loves a lover?” even thinking about his past incarnation, the og huntsman, hmm.

there’s something uplifting about how their fates have untangled in the final chapter and yet there’s the chance that they will meet again.

i chalked it to love, romantic love, but. hmm. maybe it’s a different kind, after all.

i’m inclined to believe that he fell in love and also moved on, but. want to ruminate on it some more tbh.

it’s always so fun to find out that the author intended to kill a character and then changed their mind

usually it’s for the better, i think, even though there’s definitely been a few times where i have thought “you should have let them die/it was the right choice that they died however much it breaks my heart”

not this time! would have been way too sad if death was shiho’s fate!!!

finally finished a not so fairytale and genuinely surprised it got a wholesome and satisfying ending, considering the misery, dysfunction and confusion for a majority of the story. the leads don’t end up together, but honestly??? still so uplifting and ending bc of that selflessness?

also confirmed aromantic lead???? incredible. it was revealed in the author’s note, but honestly looking back, does explain why i was never quite on board with the leads maybe falling for each other (v. clearly on jeha’s end, much murkier on moran’s end—it was love, certainly she cares for him but just like moran’s relationship with shiho, really hard to parse out the nature of what those feelings were; even if shiho’s love was far more destructive.)

absolutely insane that at its most dysfunctional, the ot3 was “a vengeful goddess constantly on the brink of a meltdown, the nine tailed fox who is her adopted son that she raised, and the boy toy (human) who repeatedly suffered murder attempts from them both” and yet it was a very complex, complicated and compelling relationship on all three sides of the triangle! it became cozy! i laughed a lot bc of how ridiculous it was! loved the confirmation that it was possible the three might reunite as actual friends in the future.

i think that i found a few things lacking, miho, the woodsman, a little bit more about the cervid spirit fall from grace. but that might benefit from a reread now that i know how the story goes, and what the characters aren’t aware of.

v. entertaining read tho. 9/10.
