This series has been with me in a way that few other series have been able to match, and for much longer. I got into it 2014/2015 as the anime was first airing, and I remember how much it left an imprint on me through a difficult time in my life. I've gotten back into it sporadically over the years, but nothing quite like the resurgence in love I've had for it in the past year.

I can't even say what it means to me to have a series that values its female characters, that values platonic bonds and doesn't devalue them for the sake of romance, that still loves its romance, that believes in reconciliation and forgiveness, in building a better future together. I can't get over how much the homoerotic subtext of Jaeha and Kija and the ace/aroness of Su-won makes me happy.

I think AkaYona probably holds the honor of being the series I've reread the most over the years, and it'll probably maintain that title since I intend to reread it again. Just looking at panels is enough to give me a dopamine shot, honestly.

So I'm sad it's over, but I love the ending. I love that everyone is happy and safe, and that they're all working towards a better future together. I love that the series makes it clear their lives will go on from here.
