There was no need to slink through the shadows or conceal himself—these people had no power, no one to call upon should things take a turn for the worse. Ruin moved with the confidence of a predator, his steps echoing against the damp stone as he passed rows of wary eyes. Some turned away instinctively, too used to predators lurking in places like this. Others, bolder or more desperate, reached out with trembling hands, whispering pleas for food, for coin, for anything that might ease their suffering. He ignored them, his crimson gaze sweeping over the pitiful encampment—until it caught on something—someone—out of place.
