One of the things that sucks about being an animation nerd is having to live with the fact that, from a technical standpoint, the Hotel Transylvania movies are absolutely ground-breakingly staggeringly incredible.
As completely ignorant on animation, why is that? How is Hotel Transylvania any good??
The short version is that theyâve been figuring out how to plug the strengths of traditional animation into cg animation.
Longer version: cg animation is essentially puppet animation. You build a model, paint it and dress it up, and then move it around. Thatâs why Pixarâs first animated film was about toys, and their second one was about bugs: itâs much harder to make something look convincingly soft and fleshy than it is to work with something thatâs supposed to be rigid.
Working inside this paradigm, the progression that makes sense is to work on developing more and more articulated puppets. Figure out how to add fur (Monsters, Inc.), move fish (Finding Nemo), get to the point where you can actually make human puppets who look appealing (The Incredibles.) In 2012 the big animated feature films showed off huge strides in particle physics (The Guardians), and hair (Tangled, Brave). Character effects and lighting were really hitting their stride, and the general movement was towards more detailed models, increased realism, richer and more intricate environments. The models only had so much range before they started to break, so squash & stretch was never going to be as pronounced as something from drawn animation could be. Hotel Transylvania challenged that.
As a show creator and director, Genndy Tartakovskyâs always shown a preference for stylization. Heâs also got a reputation for incredible and deliberate timing, spectacular silhouettes, dramatic movement and clear staging, and just overall really good at directing animation. He wanted Tex Avery-type animation in CG and by golly, he did it.
Look at how exaggerated those shapes are, and how snappy, smooth, and fast the transitions between each one: thatâs not something that was really being done. The motion-blurring alone was so defining that apparently Sony calls it a âGenndy blur.â
Animation is essentially the art of movement: the better the movement, the better the animation, and the Hotel Transylvania franchise has spectacular movement.
The model is actually being resculpted for maximum exaggeration, and the smears and blurs make the transitions between each pose fast, energetic, and snappy.
Like. Look at that movement. Look at how tightly heâs rooted while the follow through of his clothing sells the hard stop of each hip bump. Look at how sharp and deep his knees are bending, the way his weight shifts onto his heels and that tiny little side step at the very end, where he keeps his weight on his right foot for a split second before popping over to his new position. And heâs dancing the Macarena because he had to find the most brain-dominating, toe-tappingist song in the universe to win a DJ battle where a Kraken was being driven into a murderous rage by a mystical melody and it had to be counteracted by another song.
Yeah.
Somebody once described the Hotel Transylvania franchise as âlike seeing Lamborghini making a clown car,â and honestly, thatâs kind of what itâs like.

The grind all day people are so sad and obnoxious. In what world should a person with a full-time job be broke? Capitalism is a brain rotting disease.

The Fallen Arm during the day.
Here is my completed extremely self indulgent Banjo Kazooie series I made between 2019-2020 because I miss them so much.
Double puff, just to be safe.
This is the most ghibli-esc movement Iâve ever seen an animal make
When I was a kid I was genuinely horrified by the idea of growing up and I think a large part of it was the insistence by adults in my life that puberty would turn me into someone completely different. They were like âsure you donât like make up and boys now but youâll feel differently after pubertyâ or like âsure you think you wouldnât want kids now but youâll see once youâre olderâ
itâs like damn, stop invalidating kidsâ personalities and listen to them and maybe you wonât be so shocked when they donât transform into a new person later
My wife and I donât ever plan on having kids, but my Dad always had one piece of parenting advice Iâll never forget.
He said âPay attention to who your children are when theyâre little. If you do that, youâll never be surprised at who they become. The only people who think kids suddenly become other people when they hit adolescence are the ones who never listened to what their kids were telling them the whole time.â

She had third degree burns on her genitals, needed a skin graft to repair the damage and was permanently disfigured, and left disabled for two years. Part of her original $20,000 claim was for her daughter's lost income while she cared for her. Also, there were 700 previous complaints of people being burned by McDonald's coffee, which they quietly paid off. They offered Liebeck $800.
Stella Liebeck was 79 years old at the time of the incident, and the settlement helped her pay for a live-in nurse as she was partially disabled for two full years after being so badly burned she went into shock. She passed away in 2004 with little to no quality of life per her own daughter. She originally sought $20,000 dollars to cover her eight day hospital stay (including skin graphs) and compensation for her daughter's lost wages after she spent three weeks providing round-the-clock care.
Incidently, liquids served at 190 degrees is capable of causing third degree burns--which cause severe, permanent damage all the way to the muscle layer--within 3 seconds of contact with human skin. If you have a strong stomach, you can even find photographic evidence of her wounds with a quick google search. This didn't stop almost every major news outlet perpetuating MacDonald's coordinated smear campaign against her. MacDonalds' justification for this was basically, well, all fast food is hot and we have better things to worry about. Literally. This deliberately manufactured overly litigious gold digger stereotype is still remembered today via the Stella Awards, which mocks all the "frivolous" lawsuits against your favorite brands. Named after a little old lady who was permanently disfigured and handicapped from a ridiculously dangerous product.
Classy.
Never, ever take a corporation's side over a private citizen when lawsuits are involved.
She eventually died under the care of a live-in nurse from infection complications due to the fact that the damage had to be treated repeatedly over multiple years. While being mocked *worldwide* and constantly hassled by the media. The last few years of this woman's life were a miserable hell because McDonald's was too cheap to pay her medical costs when she asked.
