“Some people, they'll never accept him, but some will and he seems to know how to find the good ones.”
Probably many people have already said this, but you know what the best thing from Pixar’s Luca is for me? The good story-telling that makes the story and it’s message so accesible for anyone.
I discovered this watching first the movie with my family. While I was, as you do, totally on full “omg these fishes gay” mode, my family on the other hand were totally amazed by how good of a story about “acceptance and finding good friends in your life” (paraphrasing) this movie is.
When I talked with another fella lgbtq+ friend about this movie, they told me they found many perallels I didn’t even thought about, such as [somewhat of a spoiler incoming] when Luca’s parents theaten him with sending him into the deep seas, and how that could be a low-key reference to conversion therapy.
And while most of my same-age-known-people did see a queer storyline in the movie, all of them saw it in different degrees, some saw more reference and strong points than others, some saw less, and some thought it was a most likely queer story, but also didn’t see too much into it and believed that the movie could also work as just what the general pitch for it is- a close friendship navigating the seas of opening to the world that surrounds you as- well, as yourself.
I think my point here is is that, in more than one way, Luca is a masterpiece, specially when it comes to be relatable to people.
You don’t have to relate to the whole plot, just some parts if you want. And most important, you can relate in SO many different ways. You can see it as a good story about lgbtq+ youth and how it’s so necessary to have a strong support system from a young age, as the story about too friends navigating life, even as a story of a family seeing their kid from what he is and what he wants and learning that you can’t hide them from a world that you might not like for them, and that they are allowed to make their own exploring and just living.
What it’s important in this movie is not, in my opinion, what you interpret from this movie, because that’s the same as with every movie- it’s an interpretation, at the end of the day it’s totally subjective to the viewer. What matters is the message that you can find, universally, despite from what your specific interpretation is:
It’s okay to be who you are, you can and should put yourself out there if that’s your desire, and when you do that, you deserve to be yourself without having any fear. Some people can be mean, but at the end, you are not alone, and the right people will find you.
Having kids watch a movie like Luca from very young ages is so important, because it will teach the very youngest generation that we have that, indeed, being different isn’t a bad thing, is just a thing. That if you are different, you don’t have to hide it. That not only YOU shouldn’t hide yourself from the world, but that also you shouldn’t make OTHERS feel like they don’t belong and should hide.
I could write for ages about the wonderful things about this movie- not only story-wise, but also, have you seen that animation? Chills. Literal chills. But for now, i think this is the part I wanted to highlight the most, becuase there are tons of movies about accepting people, but Luca might be, in my opinion, one of the best ejecuted, working not only for all ages and all interpretations, but more important, in such a tender way and with character so likables that there is no way the message of the movie won’t resonate with you.
Loved this movie for this reason <3

David: “It was like two ships passing because one of us was always in a relationship. And we never crossed that boundary. You know, we respected that […] It was a situation that… we couldn’t do anything about it. Jennifer: I honestly remember saying one time to David, “it’s gonna be such a bummer if the first time you and I actually kiss is on national television.” Sure enough the first time we kissed was in that coffee shop.
there chemistry is still magical <3

“their love story is far from over” so true queen
And he looked at the slain, recalling their names. Then suddenly he beheld his sister Éowyn as she lay, and he knew her. He stood a moment as a man who is pierced in the midst of a cry by an arrow through the heart; and then his face went deathly white; and a cold fury rose in him, so that all speech failed him for a while. A fey mood took him.
‘Éowyn, Éowyn!’ he cried at last: ‘Éowyn, how come you here? What madness or devilry is this? Death, death, death! Death take us all!’ . The Return of the King, J. R. R. Tolkien.
