COURTING 101 BY BUCKY BARNES by charlesdk
Word Count: 9k+ Rating: Teen Pairing: Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes
Moodboard Credit: @atticuos. ♡
Summary:
It takes a whole minute before Steve turns to him and, when he does, he plucks the paintbrush out of his mouth and smiles at him, like everything is completely fine and normal and not at all a disaster.
“Hey, Buck,” Steve greets him, happy as ever. “How was your day?”
“Did a fucking bomb explode in here?” Bucky asks, the words stumbling out of his mouth before he even realizes it.
OR; Bucky likes Steve. He likes Steve a lot. But Steve is a fucking disaster and an asshole and Bucky has had enough of it. In hindsight, getting revenge probably isn’t the best way to get Steve to like him back.
Read on AO3.
This is a tiny little sort of coda to And Shadows Will Fall Behind (strong skinny artist Steve/Winter Soldier Bucky) for @onyourleftbooob. I started writing a quick ‘This is what Bucky ends up doing now that he’s not fighting’ meta and it rapidly spiralled out of control. Oops? (Approx 1900 words)
___________
For the first little while after he officially stopped fighting, it was hard. Bucky’d never spent time doing nothing (his time in SHIELD custody didn’t count; he was barely even Bucky then) and it took time to get used to. Whenever the Avengers hit the news he couldn’t help the tiny pangs of guilt, even though he knew they were irrational.
Steve was good at distracting him, at finding things for him to do. Fred the pink not-a-dog got a blue boyfriend and they acquired a herd of rainbow coloured pups, each of them not-quite-a-dog in different ways.
The plants migrated out of Bucky’s bathroom, to be joined by cousins better suited to the not-so-humid air of the living room, the bedroom, the kitchen, of the hall and the office, until Bucky’s apartment resembled an indoor jungle.
Steve loved it, thought it was beautiful, Bucky knew that. Which was why he was so surprised when Steve stood in the living room, frowning slightly, and asked, “What do you think about losing some of the plants?”
“You don’t like the plants?”
“It’s not that.” Steve braced himself, spine, shoulders, arms uncertain, but his eyes were locked with Bucky’s and they held not an ounce of doubt. “It’s just, I’m not sure there’s room for Mildred.”
Bucky froze, staring at Steve for long seconds, then stood. “You think Mildred wants to move in with me?”
“I think she might,” Steve said. Bucky was walking slowly towards him, a panther’s prowl, face filling up with joy. “I think she might want to be with you all the time. I think she might want to share her life with you, all of it, every bit. Good, bad, everything. And you know how attached couches can get.”
“I do love Mildred.” As Bucky reached him, Steve let his hands rest on Bucky’s chest.
“She loves you, too.”
“There’s one problem, though.” Steve tilted his head, eyebrows raised in question, and Bucky cupped his cheek. “If Mildred moves in, you’d have to come with her.”
Steve’s smile was pure sunshine, golden and bright, and Bucky held him tight, warmth rolling through him. “I think I could manage that.”
Mildred took pride of place in all her hideous glory, but Steve brought his paintings, his books, his photos, a few pieces of furniture. Together they rearranged the apartment and Bucky redesigned his jungle, new pots, new shelves, hung some from the ceiling, and Bucky’s apartment became their apartment, a reflection of them both.
* * *
One day Steve came home from the studio to find Bucky rearranging his jungle, a tiny waterfall having appeared at the end of a shelf, and he stopped dead. The apartment was beautiful, the plants filling it were gorgeous, each one perfectly placed, it was art, the way Bucky put them together, and they were happy, healthy, thriving.
“Bucky?”
“Hmmm?”
“Why not do this?”
It took Bucky a minute to get what Steve was talking about, and when he did, he shrugged it off. But the idea took root, growing slowly, until he was enamoured with it. With the idea of bringing growing things, living things, into indoor spaces, into tiny places, of bringing them to people with nothing green.
“Do you think I could?” he asked a week or so later.
“Yeah, Bucky. You could. This is amazing, what you’ve done in our place. And I’ll help you as much as you need.”
It didn’t turn out to be all that much. Bucky had a gift for seeing how things fit into a space, for perspective and lines of sight. Mostly Steve ended up watching, offering a suggestion here or there, about colours and shapes, as Bucky put together a portfolio of sorts. If he was going to convince anyone he could create them an indoor garden, he’d need something to show them.
“That, and make sure I keep this hidden.” He tapped his metal arm, making it ring, a faint shadow sliding into his eyes. Steve pulled him close and kissed him. He knew how Bucky felt about the fear he was so sure his arm caused. Steve wasn’t sure Bucky was right about the fear, but he knew Bucky would never let the gleaming metal show. So Steve kissed him again, and again, and kept kissing him until the shadow faded and Bucky was smiling again.
* * *
Steve got the idea flipping through a magazine someone had left in the kitchen at the studio. It had an article on tattooing: blackwork, traditional, watercolour, and an interview with a tattooist who specialised in turning mastectomy scars into works of art, into flowers and fruit, into birds and blossoms.
Bucky’s metal arm was simply Bucky’s arm to Steve, an indelible mark of what HYDRA had done to him, yes, but still his arm. For Bucky he knew it was a scar, a brand, forever marking him as something to be feared.
The idea wouldn’t let him go.
It would take more than normal paint, because the arm had to move, flex, each plate shifting like a muscle, and nothing he had, nothing he knew of, would do.
He went to Stark. Not directly; he called on the Black Widow, except she’d commissioned her painting so she was Natasha and also willing to help. Stark hmm’d and haw’d and conferred with Bruce; eventually they decided on the same paint Stark used on his suits with a couple of tweaks, an additive or two, to make it dry fast and go on smooth with a brush. To let it stay on through almost anything Bucky could throw at it.
“As many colours as you want, as much as you want, just let JARVIS know.” Steve hadn’t been sure he was going to like Stark—too loud, too brash, everything he did too much of a performance—but for that? Yeah, he could learn. For that, he wanted to.
* * *
He broached the subject one night when they were lying in bed, Steve running his fingers over Bucky’s metal arm, slowly tracing the edge of each plate, imagining how it would look vibrant with colour. “I know you worry about people seeing it, about how you think they’ll react.”
“How I know they’ll react,” Bucky interjected, but he didn’t sound upset, just…matter-of-fact. That was worse, tugging at the space in Steve’s heart that belonged to Bucky.
He pressed a swift kiss against the metal. “You know I love all of you, every bit of you.”
Bucky smiled softly. “I know.”
“So you know this offer is for you, not me.” Bucky looked at him questioningly and Steve drew his fingers in swoops from Bucky’s shoulder to his elbow. “I can paint it, turn it into something else, something new.” Bucky stilled, gaze dropping to his arm, and Steve wrapped his hand around it. “I read about this tattooist, he covers scars, turns them into these incredible pieces, into symbols of strength, into something beautiful.” He kissed Bucky’s arm again, kissed his shoulder, the metal cool against his lips. “I can’t tattoo your arm, but I can paint it, I can make it into something you choose, something that’s yours.”
Bucky was quiet for a long time. Steve didn’t try and talk, didn’t interrupt his silence, just nudged his way under Bucky’s arm to curl into his side and rested his head over Bucky’s heart, listening to it beat.
“What were you thinking?” Bucky finally asked.
“Anything you want.”
There was almost a laugh in Bucky’s voice: warm, affectionate, brimming with love. “I know you’ve got something in mind.”
A beat, then Steve admitted, “I might.”
Bucky pressed a kiss to the top of Steve’s head, metal fingers sliding through Steve’s. “Tell me.”
And so Steve described what he saw when he closed his eyes, his hand sketching pictures in the air: green growing things and pale flowers, sunlight and curling vines, picked out like stained glass, each plate its own individual painting, coming together to create a perfect whole.
“Yes.” Bucky’s voice was faint and Steve shifted so he could see his face. It was filled with wonder. “Yes,” he said again, firmer, stronger, catching Steve’s chin in his metal hand, tilting it up to kiss him, long and slow and deep, until Steve’s breathing was ragged, fingers digging into Bucky’s skin. “Yes. Make me something new.”
* * *
Steve mapped Bucky’s arm. His heart wanted to lay Bucky down on the floor and wield his brush, to simply paint whatever came to him. But he couldn’t do that. He needed to be precise. Exact. Each plate had to be painted individually or the whole thing would come apart the first time Bucky moved it. And so he mapped Bucky’s arm and created a template with each plate outlined, JARVIS proving surprisingly helpful for more than just paint.
When he asked Bucky to help design it, he smiled, kissed the top of Steve’s head, said, “I trust you,” and left it in Steve’s hands.
It was simultaneously the best and scariest moment of his life.
* * *
When he was ready to start, he did lay Bucky down on the floor. But first he put down a plastic sheet and Mildred’s cushions and a soft blanket, and got Bucky settled, then taped more plastic to his skin, right where the metal joined flesh, covering Bucky and blanket and cushions. He needed Bucky to be comfortable, but he didn’t want fluff in his paint.
Steve worked through the day, moving Bucky, rearranging him as needed, hyper-focused, intent; Bucky was patient, watching him, and never asked to see. Steve was aching, spine and hips and shoulders screaming protest by the time he was done, but he managed it in a single endless session.
When he was finished the silver gleam of Bucky’s metal arm was almost completely gone. In its place was a cascade of stained glass, each plate an integral part of the whole, shades of Mucha in the delicate grace of the shapes, but the colours were bold: a golden sun rising over Bucky’s shoulder, the rays trailing back to meet the ropes of scarring. Vines and leaves in a dozen shades of green, dappled by light and shadow, twisted down his arm, broken by the pink tinged yellow-cream of lush peace roses. Only Bucky’s fingers were still silver, and a coil of green curled over his knuckles.
* * *
Steve stood with Bucky in the bathroom, where he’d first seen Bucky’s scars, and waited. Waited while Bucky stared at his arm in the mirror, at the colours, at the sun and the plants and the roses. Bucky touched his shoulder, tracing the rays of the sun, voice brimming with warmth as he murmured, “Angry brave sunshine.” He met Steve’s eyes. “So I’m always gonna have you with me?” Before Steve could reply, Bucky raised his metal fingers, tilting his hand back and forth, staring at the rose wrapped around his wrist, the green vine curled around his knuckles, at the leaves and dappled light, then he cupped Steve’s cheek, cradling his face. “I never thought I could look at it and see something beautiful.”
Steve leaned into Bucky’s hand. He felt almost weightless; exhausted, hurting, but it was distant, unreal, Bucky’s touch keeping him from floating away. “Something that’s yours.”
“Yeah, Steve.” Bucky’s voice was deep, rich, resonant with emotions too powerful for words. “Something that’s mine.” He kissed Steve’s forehead and pulled him close, and Steve sighed into Bucky’s chest, Bucky’s skin warm under his cheek. “I love you.”
Things were fading. Bucky was happy, he was happy, he’d given Bucky something good, and now he could let go. He snuggled closer, eyes drifting shut, knowing Bucky would take care of things from here. “I love you, too.”
Steve “Fight Me” Rogers
Pairings: Steve Rogers x Bucky Barnes
Summary: If Steve sees a situation pointed south, he can’t ignore it. Sometimes, Bucky wishes he could.
Warnings: A little bit of violence, guys making unwanted advances, minor injuries, blood, implied sexual content.
Notes: This is me expressing my love for smol and feisty Steeb + morosexual Bucky Barnes, aka one of the best Stucky combos to ever exist. This fic was inspired by these posts [1] [2] [3]
This fic was written for @ruckystarnes’s writing challenge - prompts are in bold.

The bar is barely half-full when Steve pulls open the door. With a wave of his hand, he gestures for Sharon to step inside.
“Thank you,” she says, as she brushes past him.
“No matter what people say, chivalry ain’t dead,” says Steve, as he lets the door fall shut behind them. He shrugs off his coat and drapes it over his arm as he scans the room.

I couldn't find a tag but do you have any Shrinkyclinks?
i have a lot of them, actually! and i’m creating a shrinkyclinks tag :D
Let ‘Em Come series byRainne & suzukiblu (3 works |60,965 | E)
“I think I’m gonna have to hurt some people,” Steve Rogers says, voice tight with rage. The asset assumes that will be him, then laughs at himself for the thought.
He’s not people.
The Discard Pile by Tiberius_Tibia (29/30 |44,302 | E)
I saw this prompt on capkink: I’ve seen a few fics where Bucky is born in the modern age and Steve is still Captain America, but I’d like a fic where it’s Steve in that position instead. He finds the Winter Soldier rifling through his garbage and ends up adopting him like a dog.
And from that grew this ridiculous story featuring an extremely broke Steve who does post-mastectomy tattoos, burlesque dancer Natasha, her adoring boyfriend Sam, Clint Barton who is definitely not a slumlord, breast-cancer survivor Pepper and her adoring, asshole boyfriend Tony and various Hydra douchebags. And the assassin formerly known as the Winter Soldier.
Auld Acquaintance by triedunture (complete |5,810 | E)
Due to magic or whatever, Steve is transformed back into his small self while pursuing the Winter Soldier on New Year’s Eve. Bucky, seemingly acting on instinct, chooses to protect him despite his mistrust.
Also, Steve is a bit of a tiny powerbottom.
Intersections by Rainne (complete |1,593 | E)
Porn with no redeeming qualities. Skinny!Steve + post-WS Bucky + big!Steve
There was supposed to be more. There was supposed to be plot and explanation and exposition. But there’s not. There’s just basically smut. That’s it, that’s the story. Enjoy! *throws it at you, runs away*
more fics under the cut!

Just a small thing, prompted by @brendaonao3′s (who I can’t seem to tag, so at least I don’t need to worry about whether doing so would be rude or not!) post here. Also @kiriei and @the lovely anonymous who sent me the incredibly sweet message (thank you, I hope you like this!).
I’d like to (will probably?) do something bigger, better, faster, more (*tips hat to the 4 Non Blondes*) with the idea but I’m currently drowning in something biggish–it kept eating at me, though, then the phones went down at work this arvo so… Modern AU, with strong skinny Steve and Winter Soldier Bucky (I know, shrinkyclinks from me, what a surprise).
Update: There’s now a full length, alternate version of this available on AO3 And Shadows Will Fall Behind

“Don’t they at least have, I don’t know, a mutated giant badger or something? I feel like these guys aren’t even trying.” Clint’s disgruntlement came through loud and clear over the comms.
Bucky didn’t reply, but he agreed. He understood why bad guys attacked New York. At least, why showy bad guys attacked New York. The ones who were trying to make a name for themselves, trying to be something instead of trying to get something. No one was gonna give you prime-time coverage for attacking some one horse town in the middle of nowhere. But he’d never understand why they didn’t put a little more time into preparing for the inevitability of ending up with the Avengers on their tails.
At least these guys had made an effort and dressed the part: black on black wasn’t exactly creative, but they’d tried to look menacing and every one of the swarm who’d descended on the formerly peaceful neighbourhood was built like a tank.
About as smart as tanks, too, from what Bucky, perched high above the action, could see through his scope, but they were fast and even dumbasses could brandish…whatever the hell their weapons were, green sparks erupting from the ends of short silver poles. They’d instantly zeroed in on Iron Man when he’d appeared, giving the rest of them time to clear out the bystanders and lock down the area, the cops throwing up cordons to keep everyone out. Now it was just blood-hounding and herd-dogging as they chased down the scattered swarm.
“No giant badgers, mutated or otherwise.” Tony sighed. “I think I’m insulted. Does anyone need backup?”
Variations on the theme of ‘I’m good’ came back, Bucky grunting his response as he shifted his weight. His left ass cheek was asleep and he didn’t know why he was here. Unless things were pretty damn dire they didn’t call him up for ops in heavily populated areas. Mostly because people didn’t, as a general rule, find the sudden appearance of the Winter Soldier (somehow the former never seemed to register when they came face to face with the metal arm) any more reassuring than whatever it was he was supposed to be saving them from.

i wrote this fic a few months ago and i’m honestly super proud of it so i’ve been wanting to make proper art for it so here it is finally; hope you enjoy it if you haven’t read it
Title: separation is inevitable (but so is reunion)
Summary:
The asset has tracked and located its target. Steven Grant Rogers, twenty-four years old, will become Captain America and a threat to Hydra in a few months.
“Kill him before that happens,” Pierce had ordered before sending him back in time.
(In which the asset meets Steve Rogers before the serum, fails his mission for the first time, and re-learns how to feel.)
half of this is @atticuos‘s fault but like
imagine pre-serum!steve sound asleep on top of ws!bucky, completely spread out on him and with his head pillowed on his chest. and bucky doesn’t dare to move or do anything and he murder glares at anyone coming near them because he doesn’t want anyone or anything to wake steve up. and also cause bucky doesn’t want steve to move away
and then steve wakes up and they’re both just blushing bright red. and steve apologizes but bucky’s just like “it’s fine”
AND THEN IT KEEPS HAPPENING cause bucky’s so comfy, steve just can’t help it
and maybe that’s how they end up confessing their feelings for each other
maybe steve goes to move away, saying sorry yet again, but bucky holds onto him and asks “what if i tell you i don’t mind you being on top of me for the rest of the day… or week even?”
steve blinks. and maybe his heart starts beating a bit hard. “buck… are you saying …?”
and bucky nods and tells him this cheesy sweet confession and steve laughs and they smooch and maybe fall asleep again
and next time they wake up with steve on top, steve just grins and buries his face in bucky’s neck
for the prompts: 6 or 23, whichever you like best! any pairing (:
A Shrinkyclinks AU where Steve works at SHIELD based on the prompt “Is this the moment that we kiss?”
— —
“Mission report?” Steve asks the Winter Soldier.
The Winter Soldier looks at him for a long moment, eyes bored, taking in what must be a wholly unimpressive office compared to what he does and, frankly, where he usually debriefs. Then he rattles off the details of his mission, which Steve takes down the best he can.
“Are you new?” the Winter Soldier asks when he’s done. “You’re shaking.”
Steve is, in fact, shaking a little. He didn’t expect the Winter Soldier to notice. “It’s from my blood sugar being low. I’m late to lunch,” Steve admits. Though, he’s not so much late for lunch as he hasn’t been able to stomach it. He was so nervous about his first debriefing with the famed Winter Soldier that he didn’t feel like he could eat a bite. Now, he’s regretting it.
He’s only been working at SHIELD for a few months, seeing if he can make a difference in the world somehow. Except, he hasn’t done much of anything until today: he’s filling in for the person who usually writes down the Winter Soldier’s mission report. If he does well, apparently he’ll be asked to do this whenever the Winter Soldier comes back from a mission. It is apparently a very big deal.
Steve doesn’t want to screw it up.
The Winter Soldier reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small chocolate bar. He hands it to Steve. “Here,” he says.
It’s non-descript, generic. The sort of thing included in SHIELD’s meal rations “Thank you,” Steve says, surprised. “But I can’t really eat this. I’m allergic to dairy.”
The Winter Soldier snorts. “I tried,” he says, taking the candy bar back. “Can I eat this, then?”
“Sure.”
He rips open the packaging with his teeth then eats the small bar in a few tidy bites. “Almost forgot last time. They didn’t save it for after.”
A little distracted, Steve nods. “Good thing you’re eating it now.”
“Yeah.” He stares at Steve for a long moment and says, “You have nice hair.”
“What?” Steve asks, a little shocked. His hand self-consciously flies up to his hair to see what’s wrong with it.
The Soldier’s brow furrows, like he’s confused at Steve’s skepticism. “It’s nice. Shiny.”
He realizes that the Winter Soldier… isn’t making fun of him. “Oh.” He drops his hand. “Thanks. I guess I’m just not used to people saying nice things about it,” he says with a chuckle.
“People should say nice things about it.” The Soldier deposits his candy wrapper in the trash, then sighs. “See you next time,” he says.
“Yeah, sure,” Steve says, already looking forward to it a little bit.
— —
“Everyone says he’s so scary and awful. He barely says a word to anyone,” one of Steve’s coworkers says later that day.
“He said he likes my hair,” Steve says.
His coworker just stares at him, then laughs. “Nice joke, Steve,” he says, slapping on the back just this side of too hard.
Steve laughs, too. Though, it’s not a joke.
— —
It’s another six months until Steve sees the Soldier again.
He’s just come from medical treatment this time, a large cut on the side of his face. “Are you okay?” Steve asks, standing up from behind his desk, concerned.
The Winter Soldier blinks, his hand going up to gently prod at the cut. “I’m… fine?” he says, sounding like a question. “It will be longer before I can go back in, but it’s fine.”
Steve can relate to that; he’d been out of commission himself with a sprained ankle for a few weeks after he fought with a guy who’d been giving a girl a hard time in a bar.
Still, there’s something about seeing the Soldier hurt that Steve… doesn’t like. He’s spent a lot of time between their last meeting and this one reading up on the scant information available to him about the Soldier and just thinking about him. His coworkers all have some horror story or another about him, which didn’t fit with the image of a guy who gave Steve his chocolate bar and complimented his hair. None of what Steve’s found out would make him think that the Soldier’s nice. But he was. Maybe he still is.
“Well, take a seat,” Steve says, gesturing to the seat on the opposite side of his desk. The Soldier hesitates for a long moment, then does. “Can I get you anything? Do you need ice? Or a soda or something?”
The Soldier hesitates a moment. He looks around Steve’s office for a moment. “It’s been a long time since I’ve had a Coke,” he says, voice quiet, nearly croaking.
Steve nods, then turns to the mini fridge he’s got in the corner of his office. He has a few Cokes stashed in there for when he needs a quick sugar fix. He’s happy to pull one out and present it to the Soldier.
The Soldier smiles, really smiles and it’s bright. “Thank you,” he says, grinning as he pops the tab of the Coke. He takes a small sip, then a larger one. “It’s great,” he says. “Thanks,” he adds, like he hadn’t already said it.
“No problem,” Steve says, a little confused as to why a can of Coke is bringing him this much happiness, but not questioning it. The Soldier looks really good when he’s happy. “You have beautiful eyes,” he finds himself blurting out.
“I do?” the Soldier asks.
Steve nods. “They’re very blue.”
He grins again. “Thanks,” he says, then takes another sip of Coke.
Later, Steve will wonder when it was that he started falling in love with the Soldier. He thinks maybe this was the moment.
— —
Three years. Eighteen meet-ups. It takes that long before Steve’s supervisor tells him he’s ready takes him to the cryo chamber, shows him where the Soldier is stored, where he’s kept on ice like one of the Cokes in his fridge, ignored except in case of emergency.
He thought the Soldier had a home, a life, an existence outside of the work that he does for SHIELD.
Steve was wrong.
— —
He gets access to the records he was never allowed to see. Instead of marveling at SHIELD’s ability to eliminate threats, all he sees is the torture, the pain, the way that the Soldier has been used and abused since World War II.
He reads that the soldier’s name is James, but that he went by Bucky.
He decides that he’ll help Bucky escape.
— —
“We don’t have time,” Steve says in lieu of explanation as Bucky stumbles from his cryogenic chamber.
“Steve?” he asks.
Steve nods. “I’m getting you out of here.”
“I want to go,” Bucky says. “I want to go with you.”
The small part of Steve that had worried that this wasn’t what Bucky wanted, that he was actually the machine that SHIELD thought he was, stops screaming at him to stop. He knew from the beginning that Bucky was just a man with a particular set of skills caught in the middle of something evil.
“Okay, let’s—”
Bucky grabs his hand and pulls Steve to him. “Is this the moment that we kiss?” he asks.
“We don’t have much time. The cameras will only be disabled for so long.”
“Then I’ll make it quick,” Bucky says, moving his head down to kiss Steve. His lips are cold. “Thank you,” he whispers against Steve’s lips. “I’ve been dreaming of this. Of you.”
“Me too,” Steve admits, then takes Bucky’s hand. They have an escape to make; they can dream when they’re done.
