happy decade to the horrible beast i have wrought
her voice is unreal
the left is going to win on every single cultural front because people generally prefer enjoying things with each other to following tortured/torturous rules that Christ or whoever came up with a millennium or two ago. It's the moral and political fronts that are undecided.
they're going to keep outing transmisogynistic, homophobic republican politicians as sissy faggots until one of them wises up and proudly declares that there's no contradiction between being a dedicated, Christian family man and liking lingerie and cock.

I've really come to like this image as it's become an emotional guidepost for whenever I catch myself thinking about "the evil that men do."
one thing that was unintentionally good about that veganism book was that it collected a couple hundred years of pro-vegan rhetorical tropes into a single place, so you can see the anglophone movement trend from Romantic Republican Pastoralism to "we would never do weird Romantic Republican Pastoralism. we're feminists and leftists, and we respect the many diverse peoples of the orient"
what would you call this kind of historiography? The kind that's trying to set up a historical basis not for some country but for an ideological/political movements. Carol J Adams is fighting against real historical erasure (some of the older feminists she interviewed or whose archives she went through for the project honestly said they had no clue that other women they worked with were vegetarians and linked the two political ideologies even if the vegetarian feminists protested and organized and opined as such), but she's also trying to muster everything and plus the kitchen sink for her vegan feminist project. The result feels similar to a lot of arguments and projects I've seen on here over the years, projects in which someone wants both transhistorical presence for their politics but also relevance to present day issues, often without trying to do much analysis of the material they've gathered.
It turns hundreds of years of historical records into something very flat, that's one thing. Adams at one point quotes an early 20th century feminist recalling the disgust that women felt over the heavy bourgeois Sunday dinners of her childhood. The feminist mentions specifically the roast, the steaming vegetables and the pudding, but for Adams only "roast" means anything; never mind whether "multi-course, after-church, Sunday dinner" means anything to most people in the US in the late 20th century
but she's driven to read history in this way in part because unappreciated texts by people like Joseph Ritson and Percy Shelley once were catalysts for her intellectual growth. And the moral issue those earlier writers discussed has persisted without resolution. Her problem seems not so much how to remain aloof from her subject, but how to manage the tension between it and the intertwined feelings of continuity with it, which she would exalt and harness, and of discontinuity, which she would repress.

One nip at night, Bruce's delight...
Two nips at noon, Kyle's in Dune (1984)...
I wonder what it's like being trans when your default response to problems is something other than gaining enough mass to become the little immovable object who wouldn't.

Going through the papers of the famous mousegirl artist after her death, you find in a drawer of her desk, hundreds of sketches of a fully clothed Japanese man doing mundane things.
sometimes my dog will spend a couple minutes working her tongue and jaws just to get some bothersome little piece of garbage out of her mouth that she accidentally or stupidly picked up. And then she'll immediately lick it back up off the ground.
I just wanted to say that I was hurt by the unspoken assumptions of your thesis but because it was for reasons I have yet to sort out, I will be posting about it instead of arguing with you. Like this post to still be friends with me, in spite of the anguish you have caused me at this conference.

you're never underdressed when you go out adorned with your beautiful smile :D
Okay Karl Pearson and statistics now: the biography I read didn't really go into Pearson's change of attitude from physicist to statistician, so grain of salt, but his mindset as a physicist seemed to be remarkably stupid. "We'll never be able to confirm any of this atom and molecule stuff anyway, so we just have to pick the best model; here's mine that is completely wrong but scans satisfactorily." Like, would this be less ridiculous if I knew about the arguments around matter and force at the turn of the 20th century or is this really as self-servingly flippant as it looks? How much of that attitude did Pearson take with him when he developed statistics?
This is my (admittedly innumerate) misgiving about statistics at this point. rather than a methodology aligned with the Regime of Stultifying Objectivity and Quantification, it's the product of a man who never intellectually overcame his youthful flirtations with German mystical idealism but instead abandoned that idealism for what he took to be its mature opposite (and *bad luck Brian voice* lived as an inversion of it). It's just a bunch of subjective number games and p-hacking
