If a woman is soft-spoken or emotionally restrained, she’s “boring,” “wet cardboard,” or has “no personality.” If she’s loud, ambitious, emotional, messy, or openly power-hungry, she’s “annoying,” “hysterical,” “a bitch,” or “unrealistic.” There’s this insanely narrow acceptable range for female characterization where women are expected to be flawed enough to feel “real,” but not flawed in ways that actually inconvenience the audience.

If a woman is too competent, confident, beautiful, morally centered, or narratively important, people scream “Mary Sue.” Give her flaws and suddenly those flaws become her entire personality and people act like she’s uniquely unbearable while male characters with the exact same traits get called “complex,” “tragic,” or “morally gray.”

And morality is even worse. Male characters can commit mass murder and still get fandom essays about how misunderstood grey and layered they are, but female characters get hated with nuclear intensity for being manipulative, cold, ambitious, jealous, selfish, or emotionally complicated. Sometimes the hatred gets so insane people start harassing actresses themselves like complete fucking weirdos who can’t separate fiction from reality.

Cersei is a horrible person in many ways, but the hatred toward her often goes beyond “this is a villain” into this weird obsessive rage where every insecurity, paranoia, or cruelty she has gets treated as proof she’s just the “evil queen trope” trope. Meanwhile male characters can be war criminals and still get romanticized as “sigma strategists” or “morally gray kings.”

If Alicent isn’t the “perfect” queen consort -- aka if she doesn’t bend herself into some cookie-cutter ideal of femininity or the Victorian-Goddess-Mother fantasy then guess what? She can never be “right.” Literally anything she does for herself, for her kids, or even to survive in a court built to chew her alive, suddenly becomes “wrong.” It’s the classic Angel in the House trap: she’s supposed to be flawless, endlessly moral, endlessly selfless, endlessly patient… basically a living statue of respectability. The Victorian-distilled Mother Goddess energy never angry, never ambitious, never human. Any ambition she shows? Wrong. Any desire to protect her children or assert her power? Evil.

Catelyn gets dragged constantly for being emotional, making mistakes, mistrusting Jon, or acting impulsively under extreme stress and grief as if male characters don’t make awful emotional decisions every five fucking minutes in ASOIAF. People act like her flaws invalidate her entire intelligence or humanity instead of making her realistic.

Sansa is another huge example. She starts the story as a sheltered noble girl shaped by songs, romance, and courtly ideals which makes perfect sense for her age and upbringing but fandom treated her like the devil for not instantly becoming a hardened survivalist at twelve years old. And when she does become politically aware and more cautious later, suddenly she’s “manipulative,” or “boring.” She literally cannot win.

And then femininity becomes its own trap. If a woman is kind, romantic, nurturing, beautiful, traditionally feminine, or deeply in love, people accuse her of “setting women back” or being anti-feminist. But if she rejects softness and becomes ruthless, emotionally detached, or aggressive, suddenly she’s “unlikable” and “too much.” So women are expected to embody empowerment while also remaining palatable, warm, vulnerable, attractive, morally acceptable, and never too angry all at once. It’s an impossible balancing act.

The worst part is that genuinely complex female characters usually get flattened by fandom discourse anyway. Either their flaws are exaggerated into caricature until they’re treated like monsters, or their positive traits get erased entirely because people already decided they hate them. Nuance disappears immediately.

Meanwhile male characters are allowed to be pathetic, cruel, weak, violent, traumatized, funny, incompetent, ambitious, selfish, or morally disgusting without their entire existence being treated as a referendum on whether they “deserve” to exist in the story.
