I recently reached 29k followers (yesterday actually) and there have been things going on at my campus (Boston College) that I really feel as though I should share with you guys.

Over the weekend, two events occurred on this campus, in which a student posted this Snapchat on his story and the second in which two signs were to read “Black Lives do not matter”. 

This is not surprising considering the climate and the culture that this campus allows to exists and fosters. These are only two examples of incidents that have occurred on our campus (especially within the past month) and exemplify the bigoted values that students on our campus hold. In addition, the administration allows for this rhetoric and behavior to continue among its white students by simply slapping them on the wrist for violations like this and refusing to draw major attention to these incidents. The administration has a responsibility to respond and actively change the way that race is talked about and dealt with on this campus. In doing this, they have a responsibility to include the entire black community on this campus in changing the culture on this campus. 

These acts need to be condemned and as my followers, I am reaching out to you to share this and show solidarity with the BC community as we fight for change on this campus. BC will do what it can to hide what happened, but I want to make sure this reaches many different people and emphasize that black people matter. I deserve to go anywhere on this campus and feel safe and as though I belong. I’m only a sophomore here and I refuse to allow for my administration to continue in participating in my oppression. BC’s motto is “men and women for others” but they in order to do this they have to care about the people who occupy this campus, diversify, and beautify their community. BC cannot and will not silence us.
