Hi guys, I’m back! Sorry it’s been such a long time. I’ve finally done most of my moving. I’m excited to say that after this month ends, I’ll be able to post a lot more constantly and even work out a posting schedule hopefully. But thankfully, last week I found some time to doodle early in the morning before work. And I decided to use the picture for a post.  

쳐다보다 and 바라보다 are translated to look, stare or gaze according to many dictionaries. So, the difference can be hard to grasp for people unfamiliar with their usage. But actually the nuance is slightly different for the two words. 

쳐다보다 is typically used in negative or sometimes neutral situations with “stare” being the best translation in my opinion. It’s when you really focus on just the thing you’re looking at. 

놀라지 마…근데 니 뒤에 있는 아저씨가 너를 계속 쳐다보고 있어. Don’t be surprised…but, the old guy behind you keeps staring at you.

어제 버스 안에서 넘어졌을 때 사람들이 다 나를 쳐다봤다. Yesterday, when I fell over in the bus, everyone stared at me. (looked at me)

핸드폰만 쳐다보지말고 나랑 좀 얘기해. Don’t just stare at your phone and talk with me a bit. 

쳐다보다 is used all the time, because unfortunately, there are always people staring at you on the bus or subway (and this is probably true for people in any country). 

바라보다 can actually be seen a little more romantically. It somehow comes from 바라다 (to hope/wish), so it’s like a loving gaze or looking at something with hope or awe. It’s seen a little more often in poetry or books because of this nuance. 

왜 하늘만 바라보고 있어? 멍때려? Why are you staring at the sky? Zoning out?

저 어머니는 따뜻한 눈빛으로 아기를 바라보고 있어요. That mom (over there) is gazing at her baby with warm eyes.

과거를 잊고 미래를 바라보면서 살자. Let’s forget the past and live while looking at the future. (while keeping our eyes on the future)

쳐다보다 and 바라보다 aren’t exclusively used this way. But they do have this nuance, and you’ll notice it in their general usage. Anyway, I hope this helps!

Welcome back to Korean sentence patterns! Today we’ll look at a more complex sentence which you can use in situations when you want to tell someone the reason for something, but that reason has 2 aspects.

Today’s sentence:

종민이 형 싫다는 사람이 없는데  또 좋다는 사람도 없었거든요.

Because there’s no one who doesn’t like Jongmin but there’s also no one who likes him.
