Not gonna lie, given that we live in a culture that valorises the willingness to labour without expectation of reward and the stoic acceptance of one’s own death as a necessary sacrifice for the greater good as two of its chief heroic virtues, this whole business of rhapsodising folks who’ve been economically coerced into working dangerous jobs during a pandemic as “heroes” is feeling pretty damn sinister.
Like, it’s not just the emptiness of the gesture – it’s that the situation is very specifically being framed in such a way that any “essential worker” who displays reluctance to put themselves in danger or interest in actually getting paid for the hazardous duties they’re being made to undertake is committing treason against the heroic ideal – and, of course, those who betray the ideals of heroism are the worst sort of villain. It’s basically a rhetorical framework that allows us to hail essential workers as a group as brave heroes, while simultaneously treating essential works as individuals as cowardly scoundrels who deserve to suffer.
We can say housing is an essential commodity, but has no one thought about logistics?
We’ve made public schools and healthcare an essential to society. We survived.
Now housing is suddenly impossible (despite the fact that many countries and cities already have programs that give housing to homeless people with no strings attached)?
When Romania's authoritarian regime was overthrown in the 90's, the new administration sold all the homes at incredibly cheap prices to the people who were already living in them and they've enjoyed a roughly 96% home ownership rate among their population since.
Wouldn't it be great if our government, whom we elected to serve us, would also basically give us the homes we already live in? Wouldn't it be great if they wrote the laws to say that no one can exercise ownership over a home they don't live in?
We only have a housing market because the early colonist government created it that way to ensure a labour market would grow in "Canada" and subsequent governments have just gone further to turn housing into a luxury commodity.
(Wakefield land pricing systems in the 19th century was one way the housing market was created)
There are many ways to make housing a human right/ essential commodity, and Romania's way is one of them, but it's actually a very simple thing to do. It's not being done here only because our government caters to the whims of billionaires instead of serving us
Maybe free housing for those who make under a certain amount each year, but then there would be no incentive to get better paying jobs/move out so others in need can benefit
There shouldn’t be a financial incentive for something that is essential to human survival.
Some things should be provided for everyone, and shouldn’t be tied to some capitalistic guilt trip like jobs or ‘the economy’.
“what incentive is there to work if x is free” is such bullshit. If I had a house and even free phone/internet/electricity and even free food, I’d still like luxuries like nice clothes or computer games or sweets or art to hang in my house.
“Noone would work if housing was free!” just shows how afraid many people are of losing said housing and linking their entire pay and job to the stress of striving to keep a roof over their heads and nothing else.
We work so we don’t starve and so we don’t live on the street. Not to be some hippie communist, but that’s wrong. With housing and education and childcare and healthcare and food provided people would STILL find something they wanna do and maybe get money from to buy luxuries.
There was this study/experiment in Finland where they housed the homeless for free for a while and the vast majority of them found work and moved out in better places. It works. Taking away the stress of having a roof over their heads works more often than not in creating more productive members of society.

I remember how throughout middle school - high school there was so much pressure around to be dating someone, and if you weren’t, you were a loser or deemed unattractive. Your relationship status was like a social status, and if you’ve never been in one, you’re inexperienced and missing out.
I always thought to myself, what about the work I put into my personal interests? What about the friends I build deep connections with? What about me just being capable of taking care of myself? I feel like there was a lack of emphasis of being your own self and not giving a shit about what other people are doing back in middle school / high school.
While some people may think it’s important to have had previous relationship experiences before (which yeah, it works for some people that way), there’s also nothing wrong with investing that time in yourself and your friendships, and placing yourself first ✌🏻

finding out that almost all other animals don’t have periods like we do and instead simply reabsorb the egg back into their uterine lining to reuse the nutrients is like finding out the rest of the class has been taking WILDLY easier tests than you for the whole semester
like, hey, cat why don’t you have to use your Cat Dollars to invest in tampons? And cat is just like: fuck that noise, my body is OPTIMAL for not being made of inconvenient nonsense, sucks to be you
wack.
humans: hey, bleeding every month is actually really cumbersome and I lose both valuable nutrients AND fluids I need for survival? What the fuck is up?
evolution: yes, alright, but have you considered this about it? *cartoon blow horn noise*
Human bodies suck for many reasons including but not limited to:
Periods
Bad backs
Permanent breasts that do not leave once baby is weaned
Dangerously large, unprotected, and non retractable male reproductive systems
Huge brain takes up way too much energy gotta eat more sleep less
Baby brain bigger than hips guess birth is life threatening now
Takes like 25 years for big brain to even finish maturing
•Teeth are critical to living, yet not designed to last more than a few years without constant intervention and upkeep, and don’t grow back if this is not accomplished. Also, losing your teeth means the bones in your ear will shift, and your hearing will worsen.
•Breathing, eating, communication all from the same pathway, major choking hazard. Give me a dolphin style breathing tube.
•Most pleasurable nerve endings on the body locating on the filthiest parts of you, guarenteed spread of bacteria.
•knees and shoulders have almost zero capability to heal correctly, once they break, they’re basically broken forever without massive outside influence.
