Fun fact that I learned while looking for phantom-esque stationery:
Stationery with black edges was traditionally used in the Victorian era as MOURNING STATIONERY. And the width of the black edge communicated the depth of the mourning - wide black band = deep mourning, moderated band = normal mourning, etc.
