We’re the Ervin family of Kansas City, Mo. , Lorenzo and JoNina. We’re low-income senior citizens, living on a fixed income. Lorenzo is 71, and JoNina is 70. Our 20-year-old 1998 Ford Taurus has seen its last. When we bought it used in 2011, it had over 100,000 miles on it. In 2015, we spent $1,000 to have the transmission rebuilt. While we were out driving recently, the brakes failed. We were going down a hill at the time and were lucky there wasn’t a lot of traffic. Otherwise, we would could have had a serious accident. Mechanics now tell us the master brake cylinder needs to be replaced, which, along with other needed brake work, will cost over $500. We have decided that it’s just not practical to keep putting large sums of money into a car that is 20 years old, a car whose heating and air conditioning systems don’t work, along with the bad brakes.. Public transportation is poor in Kansas City, making it a necessity for us to have a good, reliable car. Lorenzo has to keep his appointments at the local Veterans Administration hospital, and we also need transportation to buy food, household cleaning supplies, and to wash our clothes at the laundromat. Losing our car puts us at a real serious disadvantage. We need to raise enough money to buy a used car outright. We cannot afford to make monthly payments. We’re getting information about the best used car models from 2001-2008 that cost under $5,000.
