the state does not need to assign you a sex, nor does it need to keep inalterable record of it btw
a very interesting terf objection to this one boils down to "but how would the state know who to protect?" because it speaks to the incredible privilege of being in a class the state actually ever remotely wants to protect. most oppressed groups do not want the state to have a registry of them, lol
the patriarchy has done a great job convincing white cisgender women that it's in their best interests to maintain it
Researchers can do studies that track disparate impacts across genders just fine without the government storing your assigned sex as part of your legal identity. They do this with race and orientation and disability and so on just fine.
A census can understand population level trends just fine without storing your assigned sex as part of your legal identity. They can ask for this information in the census. The census tracking population level data is not the same as your assigned sex being permanently part of your legal identity. (At least, the way my country does a census.)
Your doctor can know your anatomy by you communicating it to them if/when it is relevant. There is never a time when they might need to know something that could only be conveyed by your assigned sex being officially relayed to them via government documentation. You can just use your words. The same way you tell your doctor any other part of your medical history.
People respond to "the government doesn't need to store your assigned sex as part of your legal identity" as if they are hearing "no one should ever acknowledge gender or sex at all" but that's not what's being said.
Your birth certificate conveys important legal information about you. Your name, as a designation. Your parents, as they have a legal obligation to you. Your place of birth, as that place has a legal obligation to you. Date and time of birth, since age is important for application of some laws.
And sex. That's on there too. But what is the legal relevance? What laws is the government going to apply to you differently based on what sex is on your birth certificate? I can only think of one thing my government really uses that for, and that is to determine who has to sign up for the draft. And guess what, fuck that shit anyway. The government also used to use this to decide who is allowed to marry who. They don't do that anymore. For now.
There is literally no reason my assigned sex needs to be part of my legal identity. My government is not using that for anything (important). It doesn't matter. If the gender markers on everyone's IDs vanished tomorrow nothing (except maybe the draft) would be significantly negatively affected. Data collection for research could continue as usual since researchers usually have people self report these characteristics rather than checking their government IDs. My doctors would still know which organs I have and if they forgot, I could tell them. I don't want anything to be part of my legal identity that doesn't have to be.

im a simple man i like when things are shaped like other things. stool shaped like a mushroom. pillows shaped like fruit. salt and pepper shaker shaped like two friends hugging. in my ideal world i will have a house stocked entirely with novelty objects shaped like other objects and it will be beautiful.
Maybe this is just a European thing, but something I notice if I ever watch documentary or interview-style TV from the 70s/80s/90s is how common it used to be for men with receding hairlines to grow their hair long.
It's not the only thing that's changed since then, ofc. There are so many ways in which what you might call "cosmetic non-conformity" has become much less common, but the reason the receding+long hair style is one that stands out so much to me is that I think it is related to gender in a way that's quite interesting.
There's a popular British comedian called Bill Bailey whose distinctive signature look for decades had been a bald crown with long hair brushed back (a look he called "the skullet"). A few years ago, though, he shaved it all off. The general reaction from the British public was, as usual in these situations, "Wow, he looks so much better!" but I couldn't help feeling a sense of loss when this happened, that I didn't really understand.
On reflection, I think the receding+long hair look is clearly a kind of gender non-conformity. Long hair in men is already somewhat GNC here, because hair length is one of the many attributes that contribute to perceived sex-gender in this particular culture. But receding+long hair is a style that incorporates features that are read as both very masculine and feminine simultaneously, and I think the instinctive revulsion people feel at seeing it comes from the same place that a lot of transmisogynistic revulsion also comes from.
There's something about how sufficient exposure to Testosterone closes off certain avenues of socially acceptable self-expression that makes me feel incredibly sad. The idea that it's particularly embarrassing for a man who has been hormonally masculinised (perhaps against his will) to attempt to appear in a manner that is read as feminine is pretty much a textbook example of the intersection of traditional and oppositional sexism, even if not necessarily transmisogyny.
Long hair in those perceived as boys is often a marker of the transmisogynised in itself: I'm thinking of the image of the sad, softly-spoken, long-haired uncracked egg, or the fairly common transfeminine experience of being forced to have your hair cut against your will. Long hair can be a small act of gender expression, even a shield, against a world that refuses to let you express yourself otherwise.
But then the idea that this form of self-expression is time-limited, that there will come a time when Nature takes away that shield and forces you to embrace manhood, and even if you persist in using that shield by wearing your hair long, the social cost of doing so gets higher and higher until finally you break and cut it off, and a group of men gathers round you to say "see, don't you feel so much better now?" That feels like such a clear example of gender being policed, and gender conformity being rewarded, that it kind-of shocks me how uncritically it is accepted as just normal, even in progressive circles.
There's a Youtuber I follow who has always given me eggy vibes. His hairline has been receding for years, and he has been increasingly getting comments saying "Shave your hair bro, it looks ridiculous". He recently did just that, and the comments have shifted to "You look so good now!"
From a purely aesthetic PoV, I don't even agree: I think the receding+long hair look is often really cool and I love seeing it on the rare occasions that I do. But also I felt an inexpressible sense of sadness in realising that these complimentary comments have an undertone of "I doubted your commitment to manhood before, but you've seen the light and definitively joined us, well done" that I find sinister and unsettling.
hey white people . if u dont know how to pronounce an ethnic persons name *google it* or if its someone ur talking directly to *ask them*. dont fucking do that "erm i dont know how to pronounce but __" or "im gonna butcher this haha" or "im not even gonna bother trying" . ur not funny. do u know what poc think when they hear u saying that ? u sound like a loser asshole and we dont want to spend time with u . im so fucking tired of watching youtube videos about media from my country and hearing those phrases. im tired of people saying that to my face . i respect someone who clearly looked it up and is tryong but says my name wrong over someone who just goes with whatever bad first guess they had without trying. u have too many resources at ur disposal to keep doing this. for the love of god just Fucking Try. if ur confused Just Try.
I highly recommend Forvo.com, the website where native speakers of a language contribute their time and voices to read words and names in their own language. It is a fantastic way to expand your world, open up your ears, and it's way more likely to nab a hit than just googling.
wow , I didn't know this existed, thanks so much for sharing the resource !! I will absolutely be using it now too 🖤

abandonware should be public domain. force companies to actively support and provide products if they don't wanna lose the rights to them
Game companies hate emulation, but none of them seem to understand that a lot of us would just buy ROMs from them directly if we could. I don't want a fifth remake of Final Fantasy IV, I want to pay five bucks for the 3MB file you already made bank with thirty years ago. Nobody who wants to play something for the purpose of retro gaming is going to consider a $40 remake as the alternative option, and we're certainly not going to let the original dissappear. They're crying about opportunity cost for a product they're not even selling.
op i know you're probably talking about like, video games, etc, but this is also critical for research science - my lab has so much abandonware, either because the company's out of business, or the company decided to not maintain it, and it's a fucking nightmare. we have two windows 95 computers that are CRITICAL for performing experiments/data analysis because the software needed is abandonware. one of the main roles for a guy in my lab is to maintain these little dinosaurs because if they go out, we lose access to ~20 years of raw data for research. part of why is that these companies also make their own file types, and make it difficult-to-impossible to convert those file types without their specific software. by habit, i convert all research files to more generic versions (txt, pdf, tif, etc) so that i minimize risk of losing my shit, but some stuff can't be converted.
for example, we have a microscope that is perfectly functional, good microscope, but its software is abandonware because the company refused to maintain it. the company is still in business, still makes essentially the exact same software, but they made all of the old tech incompatible with new software to force people to buy the new microscope tech. it would cost a quarter million dollars to replace this microscope. this perfectly good microscope.
so like, i know a lot of people look at the original post here and go "well op just wants old video games to play" (which is valid! games companies should not be able to push shit to abandonware and then close it off) but also this is critical for like. biomedical research. if y'all had any idea how much basic infrastructure built on science relies on shit that is technically abandonware, you would probably be horrified.
