Going over my old fanfic as I’m uploading it to a new site and like.... I’m good at writing actually? Who knew

Looking at a new ship of a dramatic rude blonde and his calmer but fiercely protective friend with a traumatic backstory and an animal face: Same as it ever was....

Okay but hear me out, what if I did get to share a bed with Roadhog and it’s a little too small for both of us so we end up pressed together and one of his arms is curled around me, heavy enough to be comforting and there’s nothing but our shared breathing and the quiet noise of the rain outside?

i saw a post about how tumblr’s fanfic community, in general, mostly wants smutty ship fic, often to the exclusion of gen fic or interesting aus or meta. in contrast to other hubs of fan culture, which include that content but don’t always focus on it. i can’t say how accurate that is, bc i’m pretty detached from the larger culture of the site because i cultivate my stuff pretty narrowly. but i know i have been guilty of focusing on ship content to the exclusion of gen content at times.

i bring it up though because i wanted to hear your opinions of that take. accurate? what do you think guides that perception?

Semi-accurate? I think there is definitely a focus on shipping, it's not just smut, people love their romance tropes (myself included) but gen stuff does seem to be less popular.

Like there's been some media I suspect didn't become as popular on tumblr as it should have because it didn't have "good ships" while some media does seem to only be popular because of the shipping potential.

(Also god there's been fandoms where I would have killed for some good gen rather than having to avoid the tags because they were full of awful ships)

A lot of romance starved gays can't find themselves in media so we turned to fan content, people tend to share ship art more, so creators tend to make more ship art for the attention (I don't mean that in a bad way, it sucks when you work on stuff and it gets less traction because it's not romance focused.)

So most of the content ends up being ship art, meaning people outside the website think our only interest in fandom is the ship aspect, and a lot of the things shared around to laugh at are "weird ships" and "weird porn" so that's the general view people outside of the site have.
