Basic backstory is: Roco is one of the princess's old magic doll, created to help her practice social and romantic skills (and be her lady-in-waiting), but once she started getting into "real" relationships, this toy got tossed out to save face

Cue Dream Mirror archetype :v

Anyway, ignore the shaky lines. I managed to achieve the impossible and finally used up an entire ballpoint pen :v

Like WHAT DO YOU MEAN the company claimed the mecha about two girls becoming engaged via mecha duels, which ends with a time jump to them wearing wedding rings where Suletta's sister literally calls Miorine her "sister-in-law," claims their marriage was "up for interpretation."

The reason why it became such a big deal abroad as it did despite the language barrier is that Japanese fans reached out for solidarity to Sulemio fans across the world, and well, people responded with quite a bit of passion, as one might imagine.

The issue was somewhat settled by December 2023 when the second half of Witch from Mercury Season 2 was released on Blu-ray in Japan, and included an interview with the director, Hiroshi Kobayashi, who, according to Zeonic Scanlations, clearly stated: "As we refined the content, we decided to base it on Shakespeare’s The Tempest. That set the goal – Suletta and Miorine would marry and become partners, and Prospera abandons her plans and vendetta to bless them."

This interview was never officially made available in English, but that's not unusual for supplemental material like this, and in any event, as stated above, Bandai never made any censorship attempts in English, so it wouldn't be necessary in the first place.

Now, to my knowledge, fandoms don't usually interact en masse across language barriers, but if I had a nickel for every time Sulemio inspired such group interactions, well it's just two nickels (so far!), but...

The second such time was the final round of the ao3 top ships tournament poll in April-May 2024, which featured Destiel from the early 2000s American television series Supernatural vs. Sulemio.

The poll broke containment, and people from all over the internet and the world weighed in on it, resulting in much spectacle. I archived a list of my personal highlights from that time, including memes, fan art, and discussions about shipping and Gundam history, though I almost certainly didn't include everything noteworthy that people made and said during that period.

The last two years have been relatively calm in comparison, though I did hear an account of Japanese Sulemio fans getting into an online conflict with one of their country's far right politicians, who, in addition to their conservative politics, ships Suletta with Guel (gross but expected), and the official G-Witch twitter account locked its replies due to 'slander and inappropriate remarks', but my information on these is secondhand, and I haven't followed up with any substantive research.

You can read all the details on the post, but the short version is, Gundam Ace magazine ran a post-series interview in which Kana Ichinose explicitly mentioned Suletta and Miorine being married, but this line was soon removed from the digital (but not print) versions of the magazine.
