The French Master... Henri Cartier-Bresson, 1908-2004 #henricartierbresson #filmphotography #leica #streetphotographyincolors
“Photography is not like painting. There is a creative fraction of a second when you are taking a picture. Your eye must see a composition or an expression that life itself offers you, and you must know with intuition when to click the camera... That is the moment the photographer is creative. Oop! The Moment! Once you miss it, it is gone forever.” - Henri Cartier-Bresson, 1957, on ‘The Decisive Moment’. The phrase was taken from a quote by the 17th century Cardinal de Retz, who stated, “There is nothing in this world that does not have a decisive moment.” #henricartierbresson #leica #thedecisivemoment #film #filmphotography #cinemtography #blackandwhite #blackandwhitephotography #streetphotography
“Photography is, for me, a spontaneous impulse coming from an ever attentive eye which captures the moment and its eternity.” – Henri Cartier-Bresson, Romania, 1975 #henricartierbresson #film #filmphotography #blackandwhitephotography #leica #cinemtography

'The Place Beyond The Pines' 2012, written and directed by Derek Cianfrance, in part follows Luke (Ryan Gosling) as he robs banks to provide for his previous lover and newly discovered son. Derek Cianfrance explains that in a meeting with Gosling, he had told him of a fantasy he had had his entire life of robbing a bank on a dirt bike, and riding down the road into the back of a truck, explaining "The police won't be looking for a white truck". Cianfrance was baffled, and told him he was currently working on a script in which those exact events took place. He knew at this point that Gosling was made for the role. Wish this in mind the frantic and broken scream, "PUT YOUR HANDS IN THE FUCKIN' AIR!", as he walks along the counter collecting money off the bank tellers is that much more real knowing he is acting out his own dark and twisted fantasy. #ryangosling #theplacebeyondthepines #derekcianfrance #cinematography #film #darktwistedfantasy (at The Place Beyond the Pines)

Proud to share 'Liam McNeill: Comeback Kid' (link in bio) the doco-short I've been working hard on over the past couple of months. I followed @liammcneill__ around at his gym, his home and backstage at Warriors Way 19 as he made his comeback to the ring after 2 and a half years healing from a broken sternum. Both my cousin and inspiration, I've seen Liam grow from a small and unassuming kid, to a tall, strong and commanding young man. Couldn't be more proud of him! Enjoyed putting him into film, and creating a snapshot we can look back on in an exciting time in his life.
'The Place Beyond The Pines' (2012), the film in which Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes struggled together on-screen whilst meeting and falling in love off-screen. #ryangosling #evamendes #theplacebeyondthepines #derekcianfrance #cinemtography #film (at The Place Beyond the Pines)
'The Place Beyond The Pines' (2012). Cinematographer, Sean Bobbitt tells the incredibly interesting story behind the ambitious 3 minute single opening shot in which Ryan Gosling walks from his trailer, through the fair crowd to a tent where he is to perform as a stunt rider. Bobbitt explains, "It took a lot of planning. The fair ground we were shooting in was an actual fair ground. And all of those people there are actual people. The only extras we had are in the tent, but everything else about it was real... We found that route through the sight, and on the night we didn't tell anyone we were doing it, no one knew that Ryan Gosling was there. We just walked out of the caravan and did it. And after the first take there was pandemonium... first off you get away with it because no one believes that it's really Ryan Gosling. You've got some people looking at him, but that actually worked for the story, 'cause he is the star of the fair ground. Then after that first take, we had loads of AD's every where who just went around saying 'oh he's gone, it's all done', and he was smuggled back into the caravan. We waited for everyone to calm down, and then we did it again... and we did that all through the evening." Makes watching the opening shot, all that more interesting. #theplacebeyondthepines #ryangosling #derekcianfrance #cookeoptics #cinematography #seanbobbitt #film #singleshot (at The Place Beyond the Pines)
'There Will Be Blood' (2007) is a tale of the birth of early oil prospecting in turn-of-the-century California. Met with the unrelenting power that money has on a mans mind, Daniel Plainview, spirals into a life of power, greed, hatred and immense wealth. Daniel Day-Lewis took home the Oscar for his performance as Plainview, whilst Robert Elswit earned his Acadamy Award for Outstanding Cinematography. Director, Paul Thomas Anderson explains the film was so eerie and harsh to edit that it was like 'steak and vodka', of which he and his editing team decided to make their evening meal every Wednesday night in the editing studio. Interesting when you consider the rigid and elongated editing style of the film. Also Oscar nominated for Best Picture. #therewillbeblood #danieldaylewis #danielplainview #cinematography #editing #paulthomasanderson #robertelswit (at California)
