Song To Get You Through The Goddamn Day #148:

Chelsea Wolfe: “Flatlands (Glassroom Session)”

(An FYI: I’m writing this in a delirious state the night before the post goes up.)

Fifteen minutes ago, I found myself cramming my studio headphones hard against my ears, doing everything in my power to take in the full experience of Chelsea Wolfe’s newest song without allowing any residual sounds from the hotel television blaring Justin Bieber’s performance on Letterman to damage this holy experience. What ended up occurring was a strange combination of visuals featuring Bieber’s various crotch grabs and the dulcet tones of Wolfe’s voice swimming against a tidal wave of violin and viola.

Let’s toss out a few facts:

First off, I don’t particularly want to be in this hotel room and it was definitely not my idea to tune into anything involving Justin Bieber discussing his latest perfume’s scent, his lack of knowledge about anything political in either the United States or Canada or watch him thrust his stupid, shiny leather pants crotch in direction of whatever backup dancer is within striking distance

Secondly, this Glassroom Session track that’s part of an upcoming acoustic record Ms. Wolfe will be releasing this fall almost literally had me in tears which, given my current weekend residency, would prove to be quite an awkward happening. Lastly and maybe most importantly, can we all just take a quick beat to appreciate how much women in music are just completely killing it this year? When I glance at the ever-growing list of my favorite tracks from the year (and trust me, many, many variations of that list do exist), the bulk of it was written, performed and/or produced by women. I love that.

Ok, it’s time to crawl into bed and listen to this song fifteen thousand times.
