Took me until about halfway through college before I realized “study” means “play with the material in a variety of ways until you understand it” and not just “read the assigned chapters and do the homework” and I think that probably should have been discussed at some point prior to that.

12月30日• getting back on here after a while; I dropped Japanese for the moment because of work and other things, started studying editorial illustration and I am finally facing some professional criticism towards my work. Many things have happened this year, and to finish it off like a boss, I probably caught covid as well. But I made some fun experiences, got my first proper job, started working on making art my actual profession and read quite a lot! I consider myself very lucky for all these opportunities, but I’m afraid that if I let my guard down for a moment, I could lose my rhythm. May 2022 be kind to all of you.
Hey guys! I just got Animal Crossing: New Horizons and I thought it’d be a great opportunity to get some language practice in. I’m gunna make several posts about ACNH so if there’s anything specific within the game you want to see, relating to Korean, let me know!

Translated by James O'Brien - The Cornell East Asia Papers Vol. 33, 1986
In celebration of Dazai Osamu-sensei’s 110th birthday here is a rare collection of short stories, Dazai Osamu Selected Stories and Sketches translated by James O’Brien. This collection includes the following stories:
Memories (Omoide, 1934)
Transformation (Gyōfukuki, 1934)
The Island of Monkeys (Sarugashima, 1935)
Toys (Gangu, 1935)
Das Gemeine (Dasu Gemaine, 1935)
Putting Granny out to Die (Obasute, 1938)
My Older Brothers (Anitachi, 1940)
Eight Views of Tokyo (Tōkyō Hakkei, 1941)
On the Question of Apparel (Fukusō ni tsuite, 1941)
Homecoming (Kokyō, 1943)
A Poor Man’s got his Pride (Hin no iji, 1944)
The Mound of the Monkey’s Grave (Saruzuka, 1944)
Taking the Wen Away (Kobutori, 1945)
Currency (Kahei, 1946)
The Sound of Hammering (Tokatonton, 1947)
Osan (Osan, 1947)
This manuscript was the first collection of Dazai-sensei’s stories to be published in English. The translator states in the introduction, “About twenty works are available in English, but they remain scattered in sundry journals and somewhat inaccessible to the general reader.” Most of what was available about and by Dazai-sensei in English at the time were his postwar literature, especially his two novels The Setting Sun and No Longer Human translated by Donald Keene. The translator of Dazai Osamu: Select Stories and Sketches chose works from Dazai-sensei’s career “to show a side of Dazai’s art hitherto obscured for non-Japanese readers by a lack of accessible translations from all but the final years of the author’s life,” and has “at least one selection from each of the nine volumes of Dazai’s mature writings.” The stories selected range from the beginning of Dazai-sensei’s writing career to the year before his death. Because the stories are organized chronologically the reader can get a sense of how Dazai-sensei’s writing changed and matured throughout his career.

Posting an old entry since my region is “orange” again... I don’t really feel like I’m making any progress with Japanese but I try. A lot of people on tiktok are also sharing small language tips and slang, love to learn that! Also why do I always feel the need to write down lists when writing in Japanese. Like that’s the only thing I know how to do haha
