Presenting the best of John Goodman as Clyde Tolson (and Kelsey Grammer as J. Edgar Hoover) in the very silly 1994 radio-musical J. Edgar! I also made a video with the best bits from the musical overall, here. If you want to download the full recording from LA Theatre Works, you can do that too. It's a Harry Shearer project and it has a bunch of Simpsons cast members and some early Simpsons energy, but, part and parcel with that, some racist voices, and also just a lot of songs that aren't specific enough to the characters or, you know, listenable. So I felt compelled to make an abridged version for my own pleasure.
And Clyde is by far the highlight! Goodman brings so much to him and it's such a bizarre, cute take on the character - like, for some reason he's clingy and dramatic, he's got baby fever, he's turned on by Hoover's coldness, he's really enthusiastic about doing menial henchman-y tasks for Hoover, he calls Melvin Purvis "Princess Luncheon Meats." There's a breakup arc for no reason except to give Clyde a parody of Rose's Turn. Goodman is doing kind of an old-timey singing voice. It's great.
Weirdly a revival of this musical is now on in London? To be frank, I hope the jokes and songs are better
I love the pictures of Hoover hanging out with the extended Tolson family because Clyde's mom never looks very enthusiastic. "My son loves him, I think he looks a little gay but whatever makes my princess happy"
(to be fair, both of these photos are from 1938, shortly after Clyde's father's death - you can see that she's in mourning clothes in the second, the boys took her to the Stork Club in NYC to cheer her up?)
