Since the The State of California vs. Tory Lanez case has resulted in a guilty verdict for him, I want to take time and reflect on how Megan Thee Stallion is one in a long line of black women to be vilified, made fun of, not believed, etc. by not just the public but specifically her own community. The Black community’s willingness to go above and beyond to protect/ advocate for known abusers, pedophiles, etc is definitely something that warrants full discussion.
Cases like R. Kelly and other abusers/violent members of this community has shown me firsthand that the black community will throw EVERYONE under the bus when it comes to protecting black men. I’m not sure where that almost reflexive need to discredit victims to keep from ‘another good black man’ from facing jail time came from but it seriously need to be analyzed.
The only way to really improve the community is to call out its faults and try to go from there, but why does no one seem to want to see the patterns of misogynoir, sexism, and normalization of violence against women and children and how they add to the issues in this community.
And I think what hurts to see the most is other black women WILLINGLY supporting these men and making excuses for their behavior. Never mind the fact that they would be facing the same ridicule and slander if they were victims as well.
