That was a crazy ass couple of days leading up to that night and the hours before were hell. There were 2 camps of will, Will use the tape jay or nay (i was on the he will use it camp) and then the other conversation of everyone is tripping balls cus the tape don't mean shit and the stripper doesn't even want your money. Like I saw someone post a meme of "my dog doesnt know hes begging for boiling water" to describe how liking hockey as a minority/queer person is like 😭
So, that day, ironic enough all the negative comments were coming from inside the house (at least I would think a queer person was commenting on the importance of tape ) but shit was so horrible 😭 on Twitter and tumblr. Like damm why everyone punching down instead of being optimistic or focusing on the thing that mattered that night, celebrating us the queer fans. Like many believed that maybe at least 3 of the sharks would use pride tape, so then why not celebrate the night ourselves for ourselves, if they wouldn't.
The post I saw everywhere were so disheartening, I was sadden by it that I almost decided to not watch the game and probably walk away from hockey. It was a reoccurring sentiment I kept seeing, "ridiculous if anyone expects anything". I get it, lower expectations so it won't hurt when they disappoint you. The thing is, this comment wasn't just for the sharks pride night, it was for anyone new getting into hockey. So, maybe, giving up is the move. After all I got into hockey cus heated rivalry. That reminded me hockey is an actual sport and that's what caught my attention (not the hockey duos, I didn't even know about hrpf) so if I'm looking for that queer rep in the male side of hockey, must it be in fiction? And then the article dropped and turns out the stripper doesn't hate me 🤧 and most of the sharks used the tape! So maybe theres a small slot where I can exist as a fan without having to claw my way around so I can enjoy. Maybe I can simply be.
Honestly think about the days before that night, the game day its self and the following days after. Because pride night isn't every night and distasteful comments will be made from every side of the internet. I think about the recurring discourse in the fandom about willmack sexuality, but their sexuality is not what I focus on. Im interested in way the conversation is being held around them in the fandom. Its such a heavy topic and honestly draining but it's such an intriguing topic to me because I LIVE, LAUGH, LOVE for queerness. So this pride month Imma set a goal to finally write the 2 essay that eat at my brain day and night 🙂↕️ (or at least get a solid start) one is what makes wm so buzzy, not tin hatting or rpf (it will be a surface look at their bond because its that immediate look that 🤨) And the second is the queerness that surrounds it, this one is fandom based, so the headache inducing one.
