Our focus is on fabrication for the Design and Architecture industries. With a team of Engineers, Architects, Fabricators and Designers, we can do metal working, wood working and concrete casting all in one place and this allows easy interaction between different materials. We will also be offering a co-op schedule where individuals simply looking for a working space are welcome to use the shop. In addition, we will be holding regular classes for woodworking, metal working for artists and designers, and decorative concrete casting. We started our design journey in 2013, opened our first store Kartār in 2014, and then decided to move to a production only workshop space, which is now Mercedes+Singh, where the names comes from founders Sumer and Karen's middle names. The 1st ever Jouir table I designed in 2013. It was sold instantly to a private collector in Los Angeles. This was 2 months after I started my design studio in a downtown condo balcony. Infact this picture was taken in the basement stairwell because I was seeking a brutalist backdrop. This was one of those designs that came from within, without understanding who's who and what was what in the design world. The usage of raw steel brought to life with natural oils, using melted bronze as a welding material to embellish the scars that make the furniture strong, just like they make people strong, and the idea of continuity using a single sheet of steel. This design was untainted, pure, exactly how I envisioned my design practice to be.

Here it is! Thank you @avenuemagazine for mentioning our first restaurant design project for @jpsindianbistro. We designed the interiors and designed and made all the signage, millworking, lighting, tables, banquette, etc. It was a unique project for us where we didn't just design the space, but also designed everything that went into the space to make it all one cohesive entity. Big shout-out to La Belle Arti @maybfilms for the chairs made in Italy. And to the lovely ladies @interiorstoinspire for the 3 tone feature blue wall. Part of this strategy was to make all our products in Canada, not just for the pride but also the social, economic and ecological sustainability factors. I started making things in 2013 with the intention of simply playing with materials to create new forms. As the studio grew I wanted to keep learning how different furniture is made in order to make informed design decisions. One of the most challenging things I learnt was upholstery and sofa frames. There were no plans available and no cutlists to pick from. I literally had to figure it out and teach myself. After many hours of design and load distribution considerations, I finally cracked it. My first 2 frames were hardwood Maple, glued, screwed and doweled with corner blocks. The spring system was 8-way tied down (the oldest, hardest and time consuming spring system​ for upholstery). It was a highly satisfying experience which led to private commissions for high quality sofas. But more than anything, it proved that you can achieve anything you put your passion and determination to. #design #making #interiordesign #furniture #industrialdesign #productdesign #yyc
