Something I'm working on...an event on September 14th to raise money and consciousness about the continuing suffering in the region of Japan affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. This is the Tour pour Tohoku, a 6.22 mile "fun ride" on the beach from Playa del Rey (Dockweiler State Beach) to Manhattan Beach and back. The Tohoku crisis is NOT over. People are still living in "temporary" housing. The Japanese government's neglect of the situation is scandalous. It has been up to non-governmental organizations like the one we're benefiting, JEN-NPO, to pick up the slack. After the ride and a post-ride silence to watch the sunset and think of the people who lost their lives in the tragedy, we will be raffling off a Huffy bicycle to benefit JEN-NPO. Otagenki Report #3: a video essay on a ride through Northridge organized by CICLE, Valley Bikery and the CSUN Bike Collective. Like the other two Otagenki Reports, this tells its tale visually. Eventually there might be an Otagenki Report with narration or even instruction, but I like the fact that I don't have a language barrier here. Anyone, from anywhere in the world, can dig on this. This is the first time I set up my Sony ActionCam on a mount on the "trunk" of my bike. The results were eye-popping. The ActionCam has Sony's famous "SteadyShot" technology already built in, but the combination of SteadyShot plus a more stable platform than my helmet made for super-smooth road action, albeit pointed out into the pack rather than specifically capturing my point-of-view. I think I will use my ActionCam this way whenever I film a ride from here on out. If you can get the chance to go out and ride in a group ride, especially one organized by seasoned vets like CICLE, go for it. You don't have to be anywhere near an elite rider to go on a neighborhood ride like this. They are designed for noobs. Get on your bike and have a blast.

Perhaps my favorite DEVO song. It didn't "focus group" well and it almost didn't make it on the "Something For Everybody" album, but thankfully when it came down to brass tacks they kept it.

Your moment of Zen...this is the current "Leo the Lion" for MGM Studios. He might not be on the opening logo for MGM movies anymore...that lion's CGI now. But unlike Tanner and Slats and the other lions who were immortalized on film, he's the one with his paws in cement for posterity. It's good to be the King. And yeah, Ms. Geek Media? I wasn't thinking about the studio when I named my company, but yeah, interesting coincidence.

This is video I shot at Santa Barbara Open Streets. I'm really enjoying being on bikes again. Good exercise, good fun.

This is a project I've been working on for a while...the idea behind this is that Linux is hiding out in your life in many unexpected places, and that I'd like to show them to you. For example, if you have an Android phone, you use Linux. If you have a flat-screen HD TV, chances are Linux is powering that little computer inside that TV of yours. And if you have a brand new car that has a display system in the dash, Linux is running that too, unless that car's a Ford. (Ford and Microsoft have a thing going on.) I haven't been able to give this project much love lately, but I intend to get back to it this year.
