bothers me when people act like the only reason anyone could dislike something is if they don't understand it (you have bad media literacy because my favorite thing isn't also your favorite). have you considered that i understand that it's bad.
"you just don't Get the Point because you Can't Read." sometimes the execution of the point is just not very good...... sometimes what the story is trying to say is not interesting

the MOMENT ms casey tells irving that burt is in the conference room after hearing offhandedly that he was looking for him and seeing them briefly interact in the waiting area of wellness and knowing departments weren't supposed to interact with each other and that her only job was to observe mdr #yeah
also can we take a mo to think about casey finding out that that isnt even a name linked to the person she shares a body with. like everyone else got a name related to their 'outie' but her. when she finds out do u think she'll be happy she has her 'own thing' or do u think she'll feel so completely isolated from her own existence and offended on both her and gemma's behalf that she becomes truly madly deeply resentful and wants revenge about it

I LOVE your posts about Gemma and how important she is. It frustrates me to no end when people pretend her character is irrelevant or hasn’t been developed. You articulate the meanings and impact of her character so well
thank u anon this is sweet <3 i'm not on here as much these days but #trust gemma still lives in my heart and soul
going to take this a step further by saying that she actually stopped being a 'plot device' the minute she was shown to be alive + given her own centric episode

Will delete later but I think there will never a good time to bring this up, so here it is. I'm a person with a lot of hobbies, fandom being just one of them. Those who already know me are familiar with my posts and my writing and none of it is malicious because I tend to focus on the things I love. And yet I've found this on twitter about me and my post:
(The aforementioned is a screencap of something I wrote with my username cropped)
I don't think it's a good time to remind you of the damaging patterns repeatedly seen in this fandom, bullying patterns and hostile behaviors coming always from certain groups, but I feel like acknowledging it is the bare minimum. Especially since I’m not the only one who has been targeted, and friends of mine have received insults and shocking threats for simply… disagreeing? And ‘disagreement’ isn’t even the right term—it’s blatant attacks against people who engage with different aspects or characters.
Since severance rose in popularity the show became a boiling pot not only for interesting questions and theories, but for strangely unhinged fans who suddenly made everything about their workplace-whitemance, leaving everything else aside and very conveniently closing off when a pivotal moment of the show dropped, revealing the reality and the full story of a woc character.
The presence of Gemma Scout, distinctly alive and fighting back in the series, changes everything the audience knew so far and it's worth looking into why certain fans refused to empathise and turned a blind eye to her.
Why did this subversion of expectations upset them so much? Why are they bothered by Gemma having a key role in the narrative (when her character did not bother them when she was ‘dead’)? Why are they bothered by the fact that Gemma and Mark still love each other? Why do they undermine her? Why do they insist that she cannot coexist alongside the rest of cast/characters? And it all leads to the final question, why on earth would a person check my silly, harmless blog just to mock an opinion that empathises and praises Gemma?
There isn’t a neat answer of course, but things never happen in a vacuum and it’s clear there’s a pattern of internal biases and racism going on. That, paired with these fans’ constant takes (uplifting white characters while ignoring and/or denying the complexity of characters of color), paints a pretty clear picture. Not new, but why is helena sugarcoated, cutified and absolved of her predatory actions? Why have these fans given more thought to drummond (a two-dimensional villain) than to gemma who has an entire episode? It’s no coincidence. And it’s incredibly pervasive how they don’t let anything go untouched: with these people ridiculing/demonizing the actress, the writing, Gemma’s character and her relationships with other characters.
Speaking of, Gemma and Mark have been called uninteresting, uncompelling, bland, boring, ‘typical’ (whatever that means, if you think a couple separated and tortured by a megacorporation is ‘typical’ go off I guess), doomed to die, doomed to disappear, doomed to divorce, irrelevant, loveless, abusive, evil—whatever. Why do they not see their relationship as nuanced and complex, flawed but hopeful, trusting and intimate, full of traumas but also hope to build new things with one another? Why are they incapable of seeing it that way? GEE I WONDER!
It reaches a point where it doesn’t matter what canon says, despite the clear, concerted efforts to state the importance of her character—these people will always frame Gemma as some sort of unwanted, underdevloped element that stands in the way of their ship. Being forced to see this is bad enough, but I draw the line at my posts being a source for ridicule. I’m not looking to change the way anyone enjoys the show, just expose the damage and the deliberate blindness of these fans. I don’t have to see your shit (*shut up about markhellyna, zufu lovers and your pornslop*), but if you take the stuff I make with bad intentions I’m going to respond.
Here's the fucking thing. I critique Gemma's lack of development and role all the time. She's still one of my favorite characters. And even if she wasn't, she's the center of the story. If the only thing you can point out is what the show does wrong with her, that doesn't prove the show's point, that proves your inability to care.
People always use the underdevelopment or bad writing of marginalized characters especially WOC as an excuse to not give a shit about them. But we know they never actually give a shit even if they are more prevalent or well-written, anyways. (The way that Emma words it is especially off-putting, as if translates too "woc characters should not be uplifted".) These people only care about their White ships and tear down the characters of color while their at it. It's something that I and other fans of color are all too familiar. (Like with reylo, jayvik, johnlock, hucklerobby, etc.) Not all Markhelly shippers, obviously, but always a Markhelly shipper.
It's the "can't touch you" racism we face all the time. Yes, these are characters and not real people. We know this. But it's funny how people only bring this up when we point out fandom racism. Like, yeah. It is racist when you constantly uplift White ships and don't care about characters of color. Sorry you don't think that racism exists on a spectrum and is systematic and you think you aren't racist simply because you aren't hurling slurs.
And the "full-fledged" thing is such a double-standard. oIrving and Helena are yet to be "full-fledged" characters and yet no one gives a shit. Hell, half of the characters in this show are yet to be "full-fledged". When Gemma does become "full-fledged", are they going to care about her, then? Because I doubt it.
I’ve said this before and I will say it again: Gemma is the culmination of all of severance’s themes and plot threads and if you have no interest in her you don’t actually care about the show you are just a filthy casual (shipper). She genuinely exists at the center of this universe and is the answer to so many questions that people had. She really is the twist in season one that turned severance from a pretty cool, creepy tv show to a potentially classic sci fi series. Like without Gemma we are missing out on most of the show’s best commentary on identity, exploitation, love, grief, etc etc. her existence as a woman of color adds so much context and nuance IN AND OF ITSELF. If one billion tumblr users can glaze their whiteboytagonist of the week, I can read into Gemma as a representation of intersectional oppression. Kiss my ass!!!
